For long hikes a synthetic may be more reliable, because you can't predict the conditions that far out (and if a down bag gets wet on a weekend trip you only have to live with the consequences for a couple days at most).

The tarp is something I bought from Camp surprisingly. I don't recall the brand, but it is strong, never has leaked and weighs just 14 ounces (16 with strings and carrying sack). It is silicone impregnated nylon.
