About Me:

I was born and raised in Bronx, NY, USA. Although I do not have Indian heritage, I absolutely love classic Indian movies, and the music and the dance. (And also movies, music and dance from other countries who follow what we in the west know as the "Bollywood" tradition, with song-and-dance sequences, etc.) I can buy Hindi and Urdu movies pretty easily (when I have money in my pocket), because I live in the right part of Queens, near Jackson Heights. South Indian movies (Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu...) are a bit harder to come by, but I sometimes like those even more. (And fortunately, there are some generous people out there who have been sending me things. For instance, MANY THANKS TO TOMMYDAN1 for sending me clips at my request. If you see videos uploaded here that you could have sworn you once saw at Tom's site, well, you are correct.)

My favorite dancer-actress came from Kerala; her name is Padmini. My favorite singer spent most of her years in Pakistan (except for a couple of decades before there was a Pakistan); her name is Noor Jehan.

Of course, I love other singers - Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt, Mohammed Rafi, P. Leela, Shamshad Begum, Rajkumari, Hemant Kumar, etc., and quite a few dancers - Ragini, Lalitha (all the Travancore Sisters were great!), Kamala Lakshman, Vyjayanthimala, Sai-Subbulaxmi, Gopi Krishna, Sandhya, Cuckoo, Rehana, Helen, Minoo Mumtaz.; and even actresses and actors who didn't dance as much - Ashok Kumar, Balraj Sahni, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Sivaji Ganesan, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor...

And quite a few music directors (favorite is Naushad).

But I'll stop there... If you look at my "Favorites" as well as the videos, you'll get a pretty good idea. You can also get a very good idea visiting my blog if you like (link below).
Hometown:
Bronx, NY
Country:
United States
Hobbies:
Indian and Pakistani cinema (especially Golden Age), Indian music, contemporary global music, good writing anywhere, independent thinkers, social justice and equality (money for jobs, not for war - until the time when we've created a society in which we don't have to depend on money and jobs anymore - someday...).
Movies:
Shree 420, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Anmol Ghadi, Naya Daur, Uthama Puthiran, Kath Putli (1957), Mahal, Pakeezah, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam...
Music:
I used to be most attached to contemporary pop/rock/global music. But now the thing I love most is Indian and Pakistani film music from the 1940s and '50s. Favorite music director, Naushad. Favorite singer, Noor Jehan (though Lata Mangeshkar comes close and there are so many others - see above).

Madrasiwala, forgive me for taking so long to answer. I admit, I have generally neglected answering comments on YouTube, devoting much more time to communicating on my WordPress blog. But also, your comments are so generous, I wanted to think of the best way to answer them. But all I can say is, thank you very much! And, interesting point about Hindi as the national language...

Ram Ram Shriman Richard,

I truly admire your strong desire to admire and appreciate true Indian gems from Bharat (India). As a desi from Bharat, I found your upload are truly intresting and wonderful. Our folks represented a true compassion for strong Carnatic music, and embraced the national language of Bharat.. Hindi as the linking language between everyone. We're so thankful to our folks to make sure Hindi comes first then our mother tongue, and this has given us an edge to mingle and share every known experience without been alienated or having to live on a anti Hindi sentiment. Some might strongly disagree that Hindi is not the national language but to differ in opinion is everyone entitlement. Thank you ever so kindly to bring so many wonderful clips to the tube and make it possible. Enjoyed your collection and have a strong admiration for your meaningful contributions to make a change to this world we are sharing.

Namaste
