Why do YouTube and Ukuleles go hand-in-hand?

http://projectvidem.us is a website where I compile and curate academic literature, and multimedia concerning the formal study of New Media, especially Web Video. If you want me to research something in particular, let me know!

SO the short answer is that they're both examples of participatory culture, a term defined and operationalized by researcher Henry Jenkins [http://henryjenkins.org/]

Here's a link to his 2006 white paper-- it's a little long, but it's really accessibly written and has lots of cool fun stuff in it!! Just check out the first, like, 5 pages and you'll see what I mean. http://mitpress.mit.edu/sit...

This article is pretty outdated, but it's still a great analysis of YouTube's functions: http://www.onlinelibrary.wi...

Also, here's an interesting talk where Ian Whitcomb brings up the role that the poor economy might have in the ukulele's recent success: http://youtu.be/YJSunVllABo...

If YOU wanna start playing the ukulele, here's some great resources:
•Brian's Huge Chordlist Collection - http://chordlist.brian-ambe...
•Ukulele Underground - https://ukuleleunderground....
•Alligator Boogaloo - http://www.alligatorboogalo...
•And just searching YouTube will yield lots and lots of tutorials on how to pick and strum and stuff -- you can find a lot of awesome stuff if you look hard enough!
