Mandy Fan (Fan Manyun 范嫚紜) is one of the world’s leading Taiji champions. Taijiquan, within the modern sport of Wushu includes nandu (difficulties 难度) which are extreme skills, akin to the sorts of requirements used in gymnastic competitions. Made more challenging, as well as easier to judge, the Taiji divisions within Modern Wushu are one of the most difficult. A Taiji competitor must transition smoothly between extremes – from slow soft movements to explosive flying kicks. In some ways, it is an ultimate expression of Taiji to be able to go from that stillness to explosiveness and then return to stillness; all while retaining perfect balance.
