I'm Congressman John Boehner.
This is a time of great challenge for many in our country. Republicans believe in the American people and throughout the past year, on issues ranging from health care to jobs, weve offered common-sense solutions aimed at getting government off Americans backs and unleashing the greatness of our people.
Last week in his State of the Union, President Obama challenged critics of his trillion-dollar government takeover of health care to show him a better plan. I raised my hand.
Because the fact is, Republicans have offered common-sense solutions to give Americans the health care reform they want. In fact, weve offered the only health care plan that will lower premiums by up to 10 percent.
Whether the topic has been on health care, the budget, energy or putting Americans back to work, Republicans have stuck with our principles, listened to the people, and offered better solutions to the challenges families and small businesses are facing every day.
We presented President Obama with this book of our better solutions last Friday in a meeting with House Republicans, and we want to share it with you, too. Please visit Solutions.gop.gov and see a copy of our Better Solutions for yourself. Thanks for listening.

In an appearance this morning on NBCs Meet the Press, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) discussed the Better Solutions that Republicans have been offering all year long on the budget, energy, putting Americans back to work, and health care the same alternative solutions that President Obama acknowledged on Friday, putting to rest once and for all baseless claims by members of his own Administration that Republicans are the party of no. Boehner also discussed the economy, wasteful Washington spending, and health care, noting that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other Democratic leaders continue to plot ways to pass their government takeover of health care.

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) responds to the President's State of the Union address:
You know, yesterday I said that the President need to prove to the American people that hes listening. Unfortunately, the President doesnt appear to have listened to what the people in Massachusetts have said, what the people in New Jersey and Virginia had to say in the elections last year, and decided to just double-down on his job- killing agenda.
If the Democrat leaders here in Congress and the President are serious about getting our economy going again and putting people back to work, we can in fact, work together to promote policies that will do that. But there was nothing last night that indicated that the President had any willingness to work together. Except one point: The President said when he was talking about health care and Ill quote, but if anyone from either party has a better approach that will bring down premiums, bring down the deficit, cover the uninsured, strengthen Medicare for seniors, and stop insurance company abuses, let me know. Thats when I put my hand up because thats exactly what the Republican health care proposal does. Much more so than the proposal that he and Democrat leaders are trying to shove down the throats of the American people.
And so, were eager for the President to come to our retreat tomorrow. Were going to have an honest conversation about Americas priorities and trying to find ways to find some common ground.

Below are excerpts from tonights Republican Address to the Nation, to be delivered by Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell following President Obamas State of the Union Address:
JOBS: Good government policy should spur economic growth, and strengthen the private sectors ability to create new jobs. We must enact policies that promote entrepreneurship and innovation, so America can better compete with the world. What government should not do is pile on more taxation, regulation, and litigation that kill jobs and hurt the middle class.
SPENDING: The amount of this debt is on pace to double in five years, and triple in ten. The federal debt is already over $100,000 per household. This is simply unsustainable. The President's partial freeze on discretionary spending is a laudable step, but a small one. The circumstances of our time demand that we reconsider and restore the proper, limited role of government at every level.
HEALTHCARE: All Americans agree, we need a health care system that is affordable, accessible, and high quality. But most Americans do not want to turn over the best medical care system in the world to the federal government.
ENERGY: Advances in technology can unleash more natural gas, nuclear, wind, coal, and alternative energy to lower your utility bills. Here in Virginia, we have the opportunity to be the first state on the East Coast to explore for and produce oil and natural gas offshore.
EDUCATION: The President and I agree on expanding the number of high-quality charter schools, and rewarding teachers for excellent performance. More school choices for parents and students mean more accountability and greater achievement. A child's educational opportunity should be determined by her intellect and work ethic, not by her zip code.
NATIONAL DEFENSE: We applaud President Obama's decision to deploy 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. We agree that victory there is a national security imperative. But we have serious concerns over recent steps the Administration has taken regarding suspected terrorists.
THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT: Here at home government must help foster a society in which all our people can use their God-given talents in liberty to pursue the American Dream. Republicans know that government cannot guarantee individual outcomes, but we strongly believe that it must guarantee equality of opportunity for all. That opportunity exists best in a democracy which promotes free enterprise, economic growth, strong families, and individual achievement.
OUR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT: Top-down one-size fits all decision making should not replace the personal choices of free people in a free market, nor undermine the proper role of state and local governments in our system of federalism. As our Founders clearly stated, and we Governors understand, government closest to the people governs best.
