Brandenburg Concerto 2-1 with 4 melodicas in consort + recorder JamesHowa... - 1,331 views - 3 months ago
I had originally intended to use an Andes 25 F flute melodica for the recorder part, but it's an octave too high, so I ended up with the minor sin of using the instrument that was intended! This recording introduces 4 new melodicas into the mix, all produced by Suzuki. The distribution of parts is as follows:

Concertino:
Trumpet: Soprano melodica
Alto recorder: Alto recorder
Oboe: Alto melodica
Violin: Alto melodica

Ripieno:
Vln 1, Vln 2, Vla: Alto melodica
Cello and Bass: Bass melodica

Sinfonia to Cantata BWV 29 for 2 melodicas overdubbed in 9 parts JamesHowa... - 1,047 views - 3 months ago
This arrangement is different in that it utiilizes only 2 sizes of melodica: the Suzuki Pro 37 Alto and the B-24 Bass. Aside from some octave shifting in the bass parts, there wasn't any transcription necessary to fit within these ranges. The parts are covered as follows:

Organ solo: Alto melodica
Organ bass: Bass melodica
Trumpets 1, 2 and 3: Alto melodica
Violins 1, 2 and Viola: Alto melodica
Cello / Bass: Bass melodica

I am reading the score on my laptop, which is why I occasionally use the computer keyboard to turn pages. I also chose to switch between using the direct blow tube and the flexible mouthpiece. The flexible mouthpiece allows me to play the instrument with both hands, which can be necessary for more virtuosic parts, such as the organ solo in this piece. For trumpet parts, I always use the direct blow mouthpiece since it results in a sound and affect that is closest to the trumpet. The bass melodica has such a delay for the larger reeds, that its not possible to use the flexible tube - one isnt even included with the instrument!

Contrapunctus 9 from The Art of the Fugue for Low Recorder multitrack consort, plus overdubbed video JamesHowa... - 431 views - 1 month ago
In this Fugue from The Art of the Fugue, Bach shows us what he can do with a theoretical countersubject. It is theoretical because he starts the piece without the presence of the actual subject known so well from the rest of the book. Then, he introduces this real subject (in sustained half notes) piece by piece in each part, slowly revealing to us how the two fit together.

This video is an experiment in overlaying and cropping, but the lighting isnt perfect. I will do more later, but I obviously need full control over the ambient lighting to get it right. At this point, though, I prefer to upload what I have so far instead of whittle it down more.
