Documentary part 6 ( rehearsing the magic flute)
Andreas, Frederic and Alexander play the 3 boys in the magic flute opera. They are accompanied by a voice trainer Ursula Richter...After noon/lunch the 3 boys flew over to hamburg, but they don't have much time to visit the city. They have to rehearse their pieces. Frederic is flying in this opera production, so everything must be exact. Between their performances the boys meet with Schmidt-Gaden who also came to Hamburg to give the boys advice. Schmidt-Gaden and the boys discuss the performed pieces and prepare the coming performances.
Then you see Schmidt Gaden correcting Alexanders singing technique..."No, that's yelling...You have a pin and you prick a balloon..." Alexander is not listening and interrupting him... "Can I speak with your gracious permission" Schmidt Gaden repeats his balloon metaphor ...Alexander smiles..sings again..."Whoi, it is not an atom bomb, imagine a balloon" ..Alexander sings again and Schmidt-Gaden is finally satisfied. "Excellent..."
The 3 boys are announced...Schmidt-Gaden is shown again:
"In the modern productions when the children have to lie on the floor, or are flying, their singing is often not as good as it could be , because every movement is an hindrance for their vocal technique. "
After the performance: Frederic asks Alexander. Have you done everything right?
Alexander answers: That's impossible. You can't do everything right...
Schmidt Gaden comes into the room and praises them: You were good, but then asks what Alexander has noticed? He answers I sang holdes Mä äd i...wrongly...
But Schmidt Gaden played this part on his cassette recorder and told him that this was fine, but showed him another part which still needs improvement.
Reporter: The Tölzer boys choir had their first magic flute performance in 1964 at the national theatre in munich. Since then the soloists of the choir traveled around the world. 1984 to China and Chicago 1986 to Chicago and ...Additionally, they performed in Vienna, Beyreuth, Naples, Paris and many more places...
Gerhard Schmidt Gaden still thinks about improving voice training/formation and doesn't give up finding the best and original way things were performed.
Then he points out highlights of his career: The Bach Cantatas with Harnoncourt were really fortunate.. every year we were two weeks in Vienna and recorded the cantatas. A surprise for me...was when I received the german LP prize in 1973 for the Christmas oratorio ..I was really young than and there was written above "To swim against the current" (free translation , but that what the german metaphor means) And that's what I really want: I don't like to accept anything uncritically, you always have to ask why. "My professors were always angry because Schmidt-Gaden always asked why.. And that's what I tell my children: the most important word in the world is why..."
The reporter asks him if there is any piece of Bach he likes to listen to (-instead of conducting)?? No, Bach makes me nervous ...I prefer listening to Mozart...There.. the heaven is open.

S. Pangratz
excerpts of his performance ( a rather small , but demanding part) in the Siegfried Opera production in 1999 (available on DVD-buy it!!!)
Small Excerpts of two Tölzer Cd's with S. Pangratz as a soloist : Again I don't post the complete tracks...I see this as ADVERTISEMENT to buy the CD's:
Schütz: Geistliche Chormusik (1998) (available on amazon.de or from the Tölzer Knabenchor homepage) Pangratz is the 1 Soloist here. The CD recording has weaknesses, but very strong and lovely parts as well.
Not a complete solo part, but his voice is quite distinctive in this piece and in the overall CD production...
(NSA Bd. 5, Hiob 19, 25-27)
I know that my redeemer lives and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth and though this body be destroyed even then, in my flesh shall I see God, whom I shall see for myself and my own eyes shall behold him, I and no stranger.
I left out the middle part:
Titus 2,11-14
BACH : Motets directed by Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden (1996) only available from the Tölzer Knabenchor homepage) Extract of Jesus my Joy (BWV 227)
Jesu, meine Freude (BWV 227)
Dir sei ganz, du Lasterleben, Gute Nacht gegeben.
Good night, existence chosen by the world, you do not please me. Good night , you sins, stay far behind me. Come no more to the light1 Good night , pride and splendour, once and for all, sinful existence, I bid you good night.

Tölzer Knabenchor ( Toelzer Boys choir) J.S. Bach - Weihnachtsoratorium BWV 248
Part VI) Arie, Sopran
Sterblicher Gedanken wenden.
English translation:
But a wave of his own hand will Bring down feeble human might. Here is all dominion mocked! Speak the Highest but one word, His opponents' pride to finish, Oh, then surely must at once Change its course all mortal purpose.
