Are they Really Down There?
Ivar's billboards at the bottom of Puget Sound were considered another Ivar Haglund myth, until documentation was discovered at Pier 54 by Seattle historian Paul Dorpat. In researching his book on Ivar, Dorpat uncovered a set of schematics, drawings and receipts that indicate Ivar not only made plans for the billboards, but with little fanfare actually installed them in 1955. Documents are incomplete, but suggest the approximate undersea location of seven boards. Documents also reveal Ivars reasons for this ambitious undertaking: he anticipated submarine travel to become a popular mode of travel in the Puget Sound.
The new discoveries shed light on Dorpat's conversations with Ivar in the 1980s:
I remember and now understand for the first time Ivar's full meaning when he instructed me on at least two occasions regarding my exploring the archive. I remarked to him, "I'm going to go diving in the archives again." Ivar responded with something like, "Well then look out for the submarines." -Paul Dorpat
Ivar's management has enlisted the crew of the diving and salvage vessel Prudhoe Bay to get to the bottom of these headshaking developments. This real life treasure hunt has been full of surprises and we hope you enjoy following the crews progress as much as we have. Only Ivar!
