2012 AS Practice vids/Extras
Before we get to the specific coursework task (creating film openings), our students go through a series of practice exercises to gain familiarity with the cameras, tripods, boom etc, and in editing, not to mention learning valuable lessons about research and planning.
Most of these exercises are time limited, and the quality of the pieces will not reflect on the quality of the actual final coursework productions!
2011 AS Film Openings
Individual descriptions pending
AS Media students are tasked with producing the opening 2 mins of a new feature film. The actual films seen here form just one part of this work; months of research, planning and later evaluations of their production, are recorded on individual blogs. PLEASE NOTE: With scenes of violence and references to sexual activity, some of these openings could be treated as notional 15-certificate films.
2011 AS film extras!
Some behind-the-scenes vids, vodcasts, rushes, rough cuts, company idents in progress etc providing insight into the research and planning undertaken by Media Studies students at Ilkley Grammar for coursework productions, all supported by detailed, multimedia blogs! You can find links for every student blog at http://asmediablogs.blogspot.com/
2010 AS Film Openings
AS Media students are tasked with producing the opening 2 mins of a new feature film. The actual films seen here form just one part of this work; months of research, planning and later evaluations of their production, are recorded on individual blogs. On 7.10.10 four of these productions were screened at the Co-Op National Film Festival (in the National Media Museum's Pictureville Cinema), a national showcase for young film-makers' work, on October 7th - nice! PLEASE NOTE: With scenes of violence and references to sexual activity, some of these openings could be treated as notional 15-certificate films.
2009 AS Film Openings
The task is deceptively simple: create the opening 2mins of a new feature film. The finished productions reflect months of research into the format of openings; genre conventions; media language (editing styles, lighting, specific cinematography etc) employed in existing texts; characterisation and narrative; titles; audience; typical budgets and realistic distributors, and more besides. All sound and music must be copyright free, and the huge range of daily decisions eventually justified and deconstructed in a detailed Evaluation, all presented in multimedia blogs. Simple really! 3 of these were selected for the 2009 Co-Op National Young Film-makers Festival.
Images of Teens IGS CREATIVE ARTS
A collaboration between all four strands of the Creative Arts at Ilkley Grammar (Music, Art, Drama, Media). Starting with interviews of senior citizens about their time as a teen, and perceptions of today's teens, work on this will continue throughout 2011-12. See http://asmedia0910.blogspot.com/2011/10/images-of-teens-project-filming-1st-3.html for more details.
Trailers featuring all productions
Shots from either the AS or A2 productions for a given year, cut to a tune considered fitting...which often means Depeche Mode!
2010 A2 Trailers
Teaser trailers produced by A2 Media students in 2010. PLEASE NOTE: some of the horror trailers are particularly effective and contain scenes that might be considered as a notional 15-certificate level!
2010 A2 Short Films
A2 Media coursework productions following the brief to create a short film of around 5mins.
2011 AS Exercises (Microdrama, Prelim etc)
Before we start on the final coursework production, there are a number of practical exercises, designed to create familiarity (and provide scope for experimentation) with the cameras, tripods, boom, voice recorder, editing software etc, as well as various narrative theories. Hopefully a few lessons are picked up too on the role of planning in the film-making process... All of these are time-limited tasks - look back in a few months to see how these budding filmmakers develop their cinematographic palette!
2010 AS prelims: sweding task
At AS students have to evidence a grasp of some continuity editing principles before proceeding to the main coursework production, producing a short piece which incorporates the 180degree rule, match-on-action + shot-reverse shot. To make this prelim task a little more stimulating they were challenged to produce 'swedes', using the concept created for Michel Gondry's Jack Black vehicle, Be Kind Rewind.
This boils down to recreating famous scenes/films with zero/micro budget, presumably playing on the common UK/US usage of the Swedish as a signifier of quirkiness and self-sufficiency! (In Jason X, for instance, we see two Swedish girls out camping, and briefly chatting to Jason Voorhees before getting closer to nature in a very unfortunate way). Intertextuality being a basic part of sweded film, without having seen the film being sweded you'll find it rather tricky to follow what Stuart Hall referred to as the 'preferred reading'!!!
These productions are part of the experimentation which builds up skills and confidence before embarking on the rather more rigorously assessed main productions! Most of these have been exported as highly compressed files, so picture quality may be limited!
