Welcome to the official page of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of ESO — the world's most productive astronomical observatory! ESO is the best suitable platform for mega science projects in astronomy as it develops and operates world-class telescopes in Chile — La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor — on behalf of its fifteen Member States. It builds ALMA together with international partners, and designs the European Extremely Large Telescope, which will be the biggest eye on the sky.
