Dec. 3, 2003 Earth is surrounded by a magnetic force field--a bubble in space called "the magnetosphere" tens of thousands of miles wide. Although many people don't know it exists, the magnetosphere is familiar. It's a far flung part of the same planetary magnetic field that deflects compass needles here on Earth's surface. And it's important. The magnetosphere acts as a shield that protects us from solar storms. According to new observations, however, from NASA's IMAGE spacecraft and the joint NASA/European Space Agency Cluster satellites, immense cracks sometimes develop in Earth's magnetosphere and remain open for hours. I have been watching what has been going with our magnetosphere now for over 3 years, posting daily animations since 2009. In regard to my opinion as to "increasing on any kind of pattern or rhythm", my response would have to be that I watch the impact of solar incomings in relation to tectonic activity such as sizable earthquakes and volcanism worldwide. I find interest in how well our magnetosphere responds to incoming big hits from the sun without totally degenerating into what I loosely label 'reversals'. The patterns that I perceive are coordinated with the solar activity for a particular day ... the dance our planet does with our galactic star we have named our Sun.
