About Clemson University Carillon

This page was made for the showcasing of the instrument known as the carillon. No, we are not "Quasimodo", we sit in a playing cabin that resembles an organ and play with our hands and feet. The carillon is a wonderful instrument where musicans, called carillonneurs, can project emotions of saddness and joy with touch and tempo.

A carillon is a set of at least 23 chromatically tuned bells played from a keyboard of batons and foot pedals. This allows the player (carillonneur) expression through variation of touch. The batons are struck with a half closed hand (similar to a fist). The larger bells are also connected to a series of foot pedals, allowing the bell to be played either by manually or by foot.

The world's greatest concentration of carillon is still in the Low Countries of Europe (Belgium, The Netherlands, northern France, and northwest Germany). The art of the carillon has spread worldwide, however, with instruments on every continent except Antarctica. Nearly 200 exist in North America.

The Clemson Memorial Carillon

The gift of 6 bronze bells by Mr. Rembert Gregory Horton '30 and members of his family in 1985 began a major project to add to the rich tradition of Clemson University. The Class of 1943 embraced the vision of a grand instrument and purchased the largest bell (aprox. 4386 lbs.). Proudly refered to as "BIG C," it and 46 other cast bells are housed in the tower of Tillman Hall.

"Red" Horton was present for the 08 June 1986 Dedication of the Victory Peal (the original 6 bells). Mr. Horton passed away prior to the completion of the instrument. The Clemson Memorial Carillon Dedication featuring carillonneur Stephen B. Knight was held on 18 Oct 1987 in memory of Mr. Horton.

The bells were cast by the Paccard Fonderie de Cloches in Annecy-le-Vieux, France, established in 1796. Van Bergen Bellfoundries, Inc., of Atlanta, GA, coordinated the design and casting with the Paccard Fonderie. Each bell was cast with the donors' names and individual inscriptions. Bronze plaques at the entrance of Tillman Hall also display these inscriptions. The Class of 1943 have the following verses on "BIG C":
I sing with joy for the friendships
that are born and nurtured on this campus
They are the foundation for that
unique Clemson Spirit
I sing for the portions of the hearts
of those classmates which have never
left these hallowed halls

I sing for those who
now soar with a bird
I speak for those who
have given me words
I sound for those who

Random facts:
When bells are cast, they are usually made with excess material within the bell. They are tuned by shaving material off the inside of the bell until the desired pitch is achieved. Once the bell has been initially tuned, it is forever tuned if maintained properly.

The Clemson Memorial Carillon has 47 bells, tuned in concert pitch from C3 to C7, missing two bass semitones (C#3 and Eb3).
"BIG C" is aprox. 4386 lbs.

There are classes that students may take in order to learn how to play the bells here at Clemson University.

The only song not allowed to ever be played, at least here at Clemson, is Happy Birthday. If we were to do it for one, we would get requests for every day of the year. That, and it would be very annoying after a while. Everything else is fair game.

Clemson has a sound system in the playing cabin where we carillonneurs can record ourselves and critique our playing. This sound system is also what you here. This audio is synched to the video from the camera to create a better video.

Clemson Memorial Carillon is located in the Tillman Hall. Access is through the building. The Carillon is located in the Clock Tower. The playing cabin is about 7-8 stories above the ground, 1 flight above the four clock faces. The belfry (bell chamber) located above the playing cabin holds all 47 bells above the playing cabin. The bells are on the level of the arches above the clock, three per side of the tower.

A peal is a set of at least three bells (usually 4-6) that are hung to be swung together. Because of the different weights, they swing at different rates. When set off, the peal gives off a glorious sound.
Clemson has it's own peal, named the Victory Peal, and is set off on special occasions, like football victories, but also can be set off for other reasons (engagements, graduations, etc.) When the peal is set off, the tower actually shakes (if you were to stand in the tower, you would feel like you were in an earthquake. When the peal sounds, dust and other particles can be seen coming from the walls of the tower. There were concerns that the tower was not structurally sound, but after a full year of testing after the carillon was installed, Tillman Hall and the clock tower were given a clean bill of health.
