Women are particularly vulnerable in Iraq. There is a silent humanitarian crisis occurring in Iraq as profound and traumatic as the suicide bombings regularly covered by the media, but not sufficiently dramatic to warrant equal media attention. It is the crisis of Iraqi women who have lost their spouses in the conflict and have suffered from gender based violence. Iraqi widows suffer simultaneously from losing their economic viability and societal identity, making them among the most vulnerable of the Iraqi population.
This is one woman's struggle.

Zelal is a 2010 documentary from Misr International Films. It is a journey into the enclosed world of two of Cairo's mental hospitals, drawing us into the day-to-day life of "ordinary" madmen and women. The film lays bare the shattered humanity of people abandoned without hope, left to stumble about in the backwash of life's misfortunes. In the process, the viewer confronts his own demons, with the disturbing realization that the mentally ill are actually extensions of society's madness.

Written and Directed by Reem Morsi, "Their Feast" tells the story of the very recent history of Egypt. The film starts with the youngest child, 7 year old, Yahya, waking up his mother very early in the morning in anticipation of the return of his older brother, Ahmad, whom he barely remembers. The Egyptian Revolution of 2011 released many prisoners who were abused by the forces of national security. Like Ahmad, many of those prisoners were just taken to jail with no real charges, and were innocent bystanders who were dragged to prison and abuse for many years without any information given to their families.
Amaal, the mother who's been worn down by poverty and injustice is trying to make a festive meal for the return of her son to create the perfect welcome for her son, and in a way erase a harsh past that depleted the spirit of many Egyptian youths. Shawky, the 13 year old, tries the only way he knows how to help bring more ingredients to that perfect meal, by stealing, and how the village security decides to share the "loot" they are supposed to protect!
This film poses the question: has the Egyptian revolution come too late? Although the film reflects a dim past, it does not touch on the future, as it is yet to be seen.
