More and more biomedical researchers are seeing the benefits of publishing with BioMed Central. Through their support for open access to peer reviewed research, these pioneers are changing the face of biomedical publishing. They are true leaders, and the benefits of open access that they are helping to bring about will be felt by the whole world-wide scientific community, including in the countries with emerging economies, which up until now have been all but deprived of sufficient access to essential scientific and medical information.
BioMed Central has launched journals with many leading clinicians and scientists. The Editors of these journals have chosen to start a new journal either to provide a home for an emerging or underrepresented field of research, or from a desire to provide an open access alternative to existing journals. These editors stand out as strong advocates for open access publishing, understanding the importance of free access to research for all, and promoting this within their research communities.
Open Access Africa 2012, an event hosted by BioMed Central, was held at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Researchers, librarians, journal editors, research funders and professionals working in research information explored the implications of open access for African research.
