Binghamton University, the best public university in the northeast. Period. In a little over 60 years, Binghamton University has built a reputation as a world-class institution that combines a broadly interdisciplinary, international education with one of the most vibrant research programs in the nation. Binghamton is proud to be a "premier public university," which means we challenge our students academically, not financially. The result is a unique, best-of-both-worlds college experience. Our academic culture rivals a first-rate private university - rigorous, collaborative and boldly innovative -- while our campus culture exemplifies the best kind of public university experience: richly diverse students, active social life and deep engagement with the community. Our students, both undergraduate and graduate, work one-on-one with an exceptional faculty that includes Pulitzer Prize winners and groundbreaking scholars. They take advantage of special academic opportunities like combined degrees, foreign language study groups and an unparalleled international education program.

"Discover Binghamton The Premier Public University," was shown to and praised by the new State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. The video showcases Binghamtons achievements as a world-class institution that combines a broadly interdisciplinary, international education with one of the most vibrant research programs in the nation. This video enabled us with the ability to tell Binghamtons story in a very compelling and visual way while capturing the spirit of achievement at Binghamton, said Interim University Associate VP for Communications and Marketing Greg Delviscio. We were also fortunate to find students, faculty and staff who were able to assist with the production from start to finish. An online video title competition was launched where participants could submit and vote for title ideas. During filming, the campus community seemed intrigued as well as curious to see the final outcome so we decided to make them part of the process by giving them a say in what the video title should be, said Ryan Yarosh, Assistant Director of Media Relations and Video Project Director. The video, which was filmed and edited over the course of several weeks, includes aerial footage of campus as well as interviews with students, faculty and staff.

Binghamton University Spring Fling Binghamto... - 181 views - 2 weeks ago
Binghamton University students celebrate the end of winter at Spring Fling. Students took a break from the end of the semester rush to enjoy music, rides and activities at the annual Spring Fling. Thousands turned out for the campus festival. The event also included the traditional Stepping on the Coat, which has been a right of spring since 1962, when Harpur student Larry Kressel 66, defied an April snowfall by flinging his coat to the ground, stomping on it and vowing not to wear it again that spring. According to campus tradition, the snow stopped and the sun came out. The ritual has become a vital part of the campuss transition from winter snows to spring sunshine. The festival ended with a performance by Eve 6.

David Sedaris receives an honorary doctorate at Binghamton University Binghamto... - 1,052 views - 5 months ago
Sedaris offers laughter, life lessons to graduates

Education is a continuing process in life, humorist and writer David Sedaris stressed to graduates at the Universitys fall commencement on Dec. 14.

What some people dont seem to understand is that you keep on learning, Sedaris said. One subject leads to another and 10 years from now, theres no telling what you might be interested in. Maybe you major in American history and wind up opening a tanning salon or inventing an artificial heart thats also an MP3 player.

More than 400 bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees were awarded in the ceremony at the Events Center. The ceremony also featured comments from President Lois B. DeFleur, doctoral candidate Caroline Tushabe and bachelors candidate Michelle Adamski.

Sedaris, who was born in Binghamton and received an honorary doctorate, used his own educational odyssey to make his point to graduates in a 17-minute speech that drew constant laughter from the audience.

Sedaris attended Western Carolina and Kent State before dropping out. Seven years later, he was accepted to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Even though he went to college for art, the creative writing courses he took there helped him eventually become a best-selling author whose personal stories are heard on NPR.

Its been 20 years since my college graduation and I cant remember the last time I picked up a paintbrush, he said. This doesnt mean I cant appreciate painting; on the contrary, Ive never appreciated it more. Im secure with the knowledge that by not painting I have made the world a better place.

If I can become successful, anyone can, he said. Ask my dad or my high school teachers. Theyll all say the same thing: Him? Make something of himself? No way. Thus, I stand before you as an example.

Sedaris also joked about something that will affect many of the graduates: student loans.

The good thing about student loans is you have a while before you have to start paying them back, he said. I dont recall how many months they give you, but its just enough time to forget everything you learned in college.

Then a letter arrives in the mail and youre informed that your loan has been sold. That was when I first heard the name Fannie Mae. Dont they make candy? I asked. Now everybody has heard of them. The name is synonymous with sorrow and catastrophe. But back in the late 80s, who knew?

DeFleur welcomed the graduates and guests by touting Binghamton students readiness to be part of a global world.

She emphasized some of the doctoral students research, as well as the graduates strong commitment to help others, such as raising money for cancer awareness or helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

One of the reasons so many employers come to Binghamton is because they know that our students are so outstanding, whether its in their service, academic fields, leadership, the ability to work as a team or because of the broad, diverse community we have here, she said. Our students gain a deep understanding of social and cultural issues.

An example of the campus communitys diversity came with Tushabes speech.

Tushabe, a doctoral candidate in Philosophy, Interpretation and Culture, is a native of Uganda who taught in several disciplines at Binghamton. She is now an assistant professor in womens studies at the University of California-Riverside.

At Binghamton, I had the opportunity to engage in critical thinking, political practices and met caring professors who challenged and mentored me, she said. Im grateful for the ways in which Binghamton University has prepared me for political and social challenges.

Adamski, a bachelors degree candidate in Philosophy, Politics and Law, recalled some of the events of the last four years with her fellow graduates and said the group has a chance to make an impact in the world.

We have been transformed by our time at Binghamton and have the potential to use the knowledge and strength we have acquired to make a significant difference, she said.

36 Autonomous Swarm Robots Mapping a Standard Home Binghamto... - 516 views - 5 months ago
A simulated swarm of three dozen autonomous robots explore and map a complex home environment by Josh Brandoff and Hiroki Sayama from the Binghamton University Bioengineering Department.

Swarm robotics is a relatively new field of research with a focus on mutually interacting, self-organizing robots that collectively achieve tasks solely through the use of decentralized local mechanisms. The idea is borrowed from biological systems, such as social insects, which show robust and adaptive collective intelligence. Compared to traditional robotic solutions, swarm robotics holds promise of providing more reliable and cost-effective solutions to various complex problems due to its distributed nature and decreased per-unit cost.

Tragedy brings two universities together Binghamto... - 232 views - 1 month ago
Li Guos work at Binghamton University will live on, thanks to an agreement the University has signed with the visiting research scholars home school, Shenzhen University in China. Guo, who was one of 13 people killed by a gunman April 3 at the American Civic Association in Binghamton, was remembered at a memorial service held April 15 at the University Downtown Center. Visiting research scholar Almir Alves and Maria Zobniw 70 were also killed. The service was attended by Guos family; Shenzhen University officials; Binghamton University officials, faculty, staff and students; Wang Bangfu, counsel from the Chinese Consulate in New York; Binghamton Mayor Matthew T. Ryan; and state Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo. Gao Litian, dean of the international office at Shenzhen, said the two universities will start student and professor exchange programs. Patricia Ingraham, dean of the College of Community and Public Affairs, said the agreement also will allow Shenzhen and CCPA faculty members to work together on research projects. Guo taught math at Shenzhen, but came to Binghamton to see how public policy and administration is taught, Ingraham said. Guo spent much time attending public administration classes and learning instruction methods, she said. The service ended with a memorial tree planting and the unveiling of two plaques — one for Guo and another for all of the shooting victims — behind the Downtown Center.

Hi. Do you do international sport scholarships?

You know, when I was a Freshman (graduated in the class of 08), we taped what was going to be part of a virtual tour in my dorm room (hired an outside company and everything) and it never got made... is this new promo video what you're talking about or is there going to be an actual video tour like every other school??

I like this new video, by the way... the words can be a bit used car salesman like (we really should just show what our SAT scores are, etc., not this 25% stuff), but the filming is a great way to really see the campus.
