DIY Guide to Converting a Geo Metro to a Battery Electric Vehicle. I converted a 1996 Geo Metro from gasoline to electric as a summer project. Later elements also included an Open Source motor controller that came to be known as the Open Revolt, and an on-board tablet computer for battery and power monitoring.
This project was essentially a summer's worth of work for the original gas-to-electric conversion. After that, I did a fair amount of tinkering, including building the open source motor controller, experimenting at running the vehicle at different voltages, and eventually even testing it out as a Propane/Electric Plug-In Hybrid.
After I completed the project, I also created an instructional DVD teaching other people how to build their own electric cars. It's amazing how much I learned working on this project, but I wish I would have had a really good base of information to start from. When I built my car, there were no good instructional DVDs out there teaching the basics of electric car conversions. So, when I was finished with the project, I put in a lot of effort creating the training DVD that I wish I could have watched before I started my conversions. Please visit my web page for the DVD.
