in a major chord the 1st and 3rd notes are 4 notes apart from each other (inluding the black keys) - In a minor chord its 3 notes apart.

Look at the way the keyboard is laid out and you'll see that the distance from C to E is 4 notes .....

  You don't have to play the notes in order... you could play whats known as an inversion

  You Could Play D E G B C for example... (this will sound very rich)

  Or you could borrow a finger from the left hand and use it to play the bottom C whilst you play E G B and D with the right h...
