On 1 September 2002, my friend, Terry Smith was inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame by the National Traditional Country Music Association. During the ceremony at the Avoca Festival, NTCMA President, Bob Everhart persuaded him to sing his legendary song.
"Jordan" was first signed to the Oak Ridge Boys publishing company, Oak Publishing in September of 1974. Years later Warner/Chappell Music, Inc. acquired the song when the Oak Ridge Boys sold their publishing catalog to them.
Johnny and June Carter-Cash were the first to record it almost 30-years ago. It has since been recorded by scores of others and was featured twice in Robert Duvall's movie "The Apostle" and on two Grammy recordings; "The Apostle" movie soundtrack and "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" by Alison Krauss and the Cox Family. Near the end of their careers, it was re-recorded by Johnny and June Carter-Cash for June Carter's 1999 release "Press On."
Terry, a profilic songwriter has had the fortune of being recorded by numerous artists, big and small, like Roy Acuff, Ernie Ashworth, The Oak Ridge Boys, Lonnie Lynn LaCour, Chris LeDoux, and Kitty Wells, to mention a few.

Mike began trucking in September 1981 for Newlon's Transfer [1981-1995], and he's logged in many a mile criss-crossing America's highways and by-ways. Little did he know that trucking would also play a major role in expanding his growing country music career. Mostly traveling alone, he consumed a lot of music during those long hours in the saddle as seen on this 1997 clip of him rolling through Monroe, Louisiana [for Apple Transfer 1996-2002], singing a couple of his own songs; "Just A Nobody" and "Snakes Don't Sleep On A Hot Rock."

Trucking came to a screaching halt in September 2003 when three of his neck vertebrae collapsed on his spinal cord while on the job. Surgery in January 2004 and nearly two years of recovery and rehabilitation has allowed him to at least go back to his music, though in a diminished capacity.
In March 2007, Mike Johnson achieved music immortality when his Yodel Song Archives containing 114 yodeling songs written & composed by him, and related material, was included in the Recorded Sound Reference Center's music archives at the Library of Congress.

My friend, McDonald Craig, of Linden, Tennessee, is one of the finest Jimmie Rodgers yodel
My friend, McDonald Craig, of Linden, Tennessee, is one of the finest Jimmie Rodgers yodelers ever. Craig grew up in a country/bluegrass music household, and peformed with his parents and siblings around middle Tennessee, until work, and then military service, called upon him to work to help support the family.
When he returned from the Korean War, the Bronze Star recipient continued his music, performing the songs of his idol, Jimmie Rodgers and Ernest Tubb. During the mid-1960s he recorded briefly for Nashville's Gold Standard label, and in 1978 he became the only African American yodeler to win First Place at an Annual [1978] Jimmie Rodgers Yodeling Championship held in Meridian, Mississippi by the Jimmie Rodgers Museum.
Craig, a inductee into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame, has performed from Tennessee to Nebraska, and places in between. He owns and resides on the farm that was purchased by his ex-slave great-grandparents Tapp and Amy Craig, on Christmas Day in 1871. They paid $400 for the land, put up a yoke of oxen as a down payment, and paid the rest off in less than two years. It was the first piece of property in Perry County that was purchased outright by a black man.
I shot this video at the 1999 Old Time Country Music Festival in Avoca, Iowa, where I not only met Craig, but also his friend, the late Sonny Rodgers, First Cousin of the legendary Jimmie Rodgers.

Mike wrote the "T-Shirt Yodel" back in June 1988 in response to the many comments he was getting about his official T-Shirt which reads "Mike Johnson Black Yodel No.1, Country Music's No.1 Black Yodeler." Even after reading this someone would invariably ask him "Do you really yodel?"
Johnson has written more yodeling songs than anyone, and his Yodel Song Archives, containing 114 yodeling songs written & composed by him, are in the Recorded Sound Reference Center's permanent music preservation collection at the Library of Congress.
Mike Johnson is an inducted member of America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame. His "T-Shirt Yodel" song is available on Roughshod Records "Mike Johnson Yodeling 40 Years" CD a 2-disc set featuring 50 yodeling songs written and composed by him.

Mike Johnson and 15-year old Mike Preston deliver a encore yodeling performance of Hank Williams' "Jambalaya" [which incidentally is not a yodeling song] at the June 1994 Michigan Jamboree in Hillsdale, Michigan.
From age 12 to around age 17, Mike Preston was the hottest young yodeler in the New England states who had won virtually every award there was for his age group. And why not, considering his personal friend and mentor was Yodeling Slim Clark. Preston is currently in Nashville pursuing songwriting.
This video was shot by singer, songwriter Johnny "J" of Sparta, Michigan. He shot the entire weekend of performances, and has the distinct honor of having the title of his song "Puckerbrush" being adopted and incorporated as the official name of their town, Puckerbrush, Nevada.
Performing since the mid-1960s, Mike Johnson' Yodel Song Archives, containing 114 yodeling songs written & composed by him, are now part of the Library of Congress' Recorded Sound Reference Center's permanent music collection.
