This video shows some works in the class "Advanced Automation and Control" (lab project, part of the Computer Science - Smart Systems master program). Projects were conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Nuechter at the Jacobs Automation Group.

Precise registration of terrestrial laser scan data using scan matching
The precise registration of terrestrial laser scans requires trained personal, professional scanner hardware, and usually proprietary software, as well as a large time frame for placing the targets, acquiring and processing of data. This video shows that this process can be sped up without losing the high quality of the results.
The data set consists of 122 laser scans, totalling more than 2 billion points, covering an area of 9ha on the campus of the Jacobs University Bremen. The data was acquired using a professional laser scanner, the Riegl VZ-400. After manual coarse registration the data was precisely aligned using the open source software 3DTK (http://threedtk.de).
