This is a poem by Olin Tezcatlipoca, director of Mexica Movement. It is a meditation on finding Nican Tlaca (Indigenous) enlightenment for Cemanahuac liberation. Cemanahuac is what is falsely called "the Americas"
TEXT BELOW:
LIBERATION THROUGH ENLIGHTENMENT Tonight it finally kicks in like a song you've heard before Tonight it finally kicks in and you finally understand the lyrics Tonight it finally kicks in and you see its mighty importance It's a kind of song that you heard on other nights It's a kind of song that you didn't hear just right It's a kind of song that stays in your head on and on It's the kind of thought that you should have thought before It's the kind of thought that puts you to think deep wide high It's the kind of thought that can make you enlightened beyond imagination But if you want to embrace it and hold it you gotta stop lighting that bud But if you want to embrace it and hold it you gotta stop drinking till you're drunk But if you want to embrace it and hold it you gotta grow up quick now: to look at truth You are living in colonialism and white supremacy You are living as the white man's slave, his punk You are living but you're really dead, for all practical purposes If you didn't have a clue before you should have seen it in the mirror. If you didn't have a clue before you should have smelled it in the racism If you didn't have a clue before you should have looked for one You're living in Racism and white supremacy and evil You're living in racism and colonialism and lies You're living in racism as a white man's whore, the slave, the fool Simple big decision: get up off your knees, now Simple big decision: pick up your dignity with courage Simple big decision: learn some real self-respect, a sense of honor Learning learning, then you say. "I am Nican Tlaca" Learning learning, they you say "This is all my people's land" Learning learning, then you say, "Not America, this Cemanahuac" Little little, little by little, one step, one fact, one bit of big knowledge Little little, little by little a thousand important facts about being Nican Tlaca Little little, little by little liberation through education, then say proudly I am Nican Tlaca part of the collective owners of this continent I am Nican Tlaca the full-blood and mixed-blood are one people I am Nican Tlaca a child of genius civilizations and great accomplishments I am a warrior student teacher of Cemanahuac I stand learning teaching, confronting colonialism I am a warrior student teacher of Cemanahuac I am part of liberation, putting an end to white supremacy I am a warrior student teacher of Cemanahuac I am true honor speaking in actions, against evil Tonight it finally kicks in like a song you've heard before Tonight it finally kicks in and you finally understand the lyrics Tonight it finally kicks in and you see its mighty importance It's the song you have been waiting for, the song that frees you and our people It's the song you have been waiting for that now you hear just right, it's liberating It's the song you have been waiting for that stays inside your head, inside your heart, liberating every part of you It's the kind of thought that you should have thought before It's the kind of thought that puts you to think deep wide high It's the kind of thought that makes you enlightened beyond imagination IT BECOMES THE REALITY OF YOUR LIFE IT BECOMES THE LIBERATION OF ALL OUR PEOPLE
