The Mission of the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is to inspire people to discover the wonder of science, math and technology.

In 1978, with approval from the City of Ann Arbor, Cynthia Yao and a group of devoted volunteers began converting the old firehouse into an interactive, hands-on museum for children of all ages.The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum opened in 1982 with 25 exhibits on two floors, one staff person and ten volunteers. During the first year of operation, it welcomed 25,000 guests. Visitor interest and enthusiasm propelled the Museum to accelerate expansion plans. Four years later the Museum opened the third and fourth floors of the firehouse. In 1993, the Museum purchased several adjoining buildings and expanded to approximately 40,000 square feet. In 2006, another renovation realigned exhibition spaces, expanded the Preschool Gallery and created two new classrooms.The Museum continues to thrive because of the endless energy and support of our staff, volunteers, trustees and guests. Visitors enjoy 250 interactive exhibits, each with a different focus to bring science, technology, engineering, math and culture to life. Figure out how things work by generating tornados or pumping water with an Archimedes screw. Kids four and under can explore water and play in a mini fire engine in the Preschool Gallery. Dont miss an immersive representation of fall in our Michigan Nature exhibit. Light and Optics exhibits invite you to strum a laser harp or to see light where there is none.Something is always new, from exhibits to distance learning or innovative public programs.
