Former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer surprised everyone in his jump from Congressman to Governor without spending very much money in his campaign. He credits televised debates for getting his message out to the state, which voters agreed with.
But, that was 25 years ago. The political landscape has changed, no longer favoring political experience or even polls, but money. You can't even get on a televised debate without having raised money. The majority of Americans give no money to campaigns though; the bulk of it comes from special interests.
And this is the root of problems in our political system. Powerful political figures can't get to their positions without funding, and without corporate donors or super PACS, it's really not possible. Is money and vicariously whomever is donating money the predeterminer of who our leaders are? Do special interests inherently pull the strings of our politicians? Is there any way to fix this broken system?
