About Me:
"We wanted to remind people of how many great songs we've written and this felt like a good way of doing it," says James Skelly, lead singer and songwriter with The Coral about the reasoning behind their forthcoming Singles Collection on Deltasonic. "It feels like we're putting a full stop on what's gone so far and after this we can move on towards the next album."
What's gone so far is five Top 10 albums including the Number 1 Magic And Medicine and such classic '60s inspired pop singles as Dreaming Of You, Pass It On and In The Morning.
Arriving on the scene in 2001, these Hoylake teens, who'd first got together in 1996, quickly marked themselves as genuine mavericks, their 2002 eponymous debut mixed psych mayhem with exquisite pop and wind-buffeted sea shanty. There were hints of Beefheart, The La's, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and The Doors but the sound they made was wholly their own. Artwork designed by drummer Ian Skelly added to their original stance and delicious hit singles Goodbye and Dreaming Of You proved they were something very special.
A year later, 2003's Magic And Medicine hit the top spot and proved The Coral were built to last; Pass It On, a Top 5 hit, introduced a country rock element, while also building on the classic songwriting sensibility that defined Dreaming Of You. The unforgettable video saw the band larking around in a Wild West ghost town. Elsewhere Bill McCai, an acute character study revealed a Ray Davies style observation skill while Don't Think You're The First was great atmospheric pop with a hint of mystery.
Third LP, 2005's The Invisible Invasion followed 2004's mini LP Nightfreak And The Sons Of Becker and had a darker feel with the exception of the infectious radio friendly hit single In The Morning, a Number 6 hit. An eerie mood hangs over the LP but from the underrated 45 Something Inside Of Me to the furious lysergy of Arabian Sand, it was another step forward.
By now, The Coral had established themselves as the musicians' musicians; Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller and Alex Turner were lining up to give them a glowing reference and when money became tight during the recording of fifth album Roots & Echoes, the former offered up the use of his Wheeler End studio for free. The results were awesome; produced by Craig Silvey it delivered monumental singles Who's Gonna Find Me, Put The Sun Back and Jacqueline.
The 2 discs The Singles Collection & Mysteries and Rarities is released Sep 15th.
