Brendan McCarthy is one of the UK's leading designers, working in film, TV, animation and comics. Credits include: MAD MAX 4, FUR BRIGADE, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, CONEHEADS, THE BORROWERS, LOST IN SPACE, REBOOT, JUDGE DREDD, ROGAN GOSH, SKIN, FREAKWAVE and STRANGE DAYS. This showreel dates from 1995.
Name: Brendan McCarthy
I recently found this old VHS showreel inside a cobwebbed cardboard box in a storage room. It features art and designs from over a decade ago. Some of what's there looks a bit dated, as you'd expect, but it's a fun little romp nonetheless. So I thought I'd post it up for your viewing pleasure...

Steve Barron mainly directed the movie clips.
I did the boards and designs for a lot of his films from that era. It was interesting seeing the snatches of Jim Henson's STORYTELLER television series. It was visually devised by Steve and written by Anthony Minghella, just before his career really took off. I'd forgotten what a creepy, weird show that was.

It felt odd looking at REBOOT after all these years. It was the first long-form cgi animated series, done before Pixar and Dreamworks got going, and at the time it seemed pretty groundbreaking. Now it looks a bit crude and clunky... Still, it was fairly way-out for a kid's morning TV show. Quite psychedelic and strangely kinky! The second season was when it really got its groove on. There's even talk of a new cgi REBOOT feature. Hmmmm...

CONEHEADS featured the last of the old stop-frame 'Harryhausen' style monster work (by the great Phil Tippet), completed just as the sfx industry was going digital. That film was my first proper Hollywood gig, and it really was a lot of fun to work on, especially with all that Saturday Night Live crowd. "We are from France!" Indeed.

Anyway, please enjoy Ye Olde Showreele.
The soundtrack features Gene and The Fabs.
Cheers,
Brendan

Just had a look at your "swimini purpose" site. I never got the book. Any chance of another printing? I got your SOLO on ebay a while back. Very weird, if I may say so.
I saw Coneheads rerun on TV a week ago. It's not bad, but I did like all your designs for the Coneheads' home-world, Remulak. That monster was cool, very old school.
Bring on Mad Max dude! When oh when is the Road Warrior gonna kick some ass again? Whenever he does, I will be there!

Hey Brendan, I love this old reel. I remember REBOOT and it blew me away when it was on TV years ago! I would definitely go and see a new REBOOT movie, if it ever happens.
What about that MAD MAX FURY ROAD feature? I hear it's dead and buried... I'll kick Mel Gibson's ass for screwing that up. Why don't they do it like the new Beowulf cgi movie, and have a performance-captured Mel?
And how about some new comics from you? Or are you totally out of that industry these days? Any chance of a new edition of SWIMINI PURPOSE, for all of us Yanks in America who never even saw the book?
