Carolina In My Mind - James Taylor cover

James Taylor is a singer/songwriter who has earned 40 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards for his songs and albums. He's a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriter's Hall of Fame, and has received Billboard magazine's Century Award for distinguished creative achievement.

In 1971, Time magazine featured him on its cover and called him the harbinger of the singer/songwriter era.

Some of his most well-known songs include "Fire and Rain," "Country Road," "Something In The Way She Moves," "Mexico," "Shower the People," "Walking Man," "Sweet Baby James," "Never Die Young," "Copperline," and of course, "Carolina In My Mind."
Life in Chapel Hill

Born in Boston in 1948, James Taylor came to Chapel Hill with his family when he was three years old. He began writing music in the mid 1960's while a student at a New England boarding school, far removed from his family and friends in Chapel Hill. He eventually graduated from Chapel Hill High School. Isaac Taylor, James' late father, was for a time Dean of the UNC-Chapel Hill medical school.
The James Taylor Bridge over Morgan Creek

The recently-dedicated James Taylor Bridge spans Morgan Creek, down a steep slope from the house on Morgan Creek Road in Chapel Hill where James grew up. The museum lobbied the state to name the bridge in Mr. Taylor's honor.

(Text below is excerpted from an article by David Perlmutt of the Charlotte Observer and life-long friend of James and the Taylor family. Thanks to Mr. Perlmutt for allowing us to reprint portions of his article here)

Morgan Creek, down a steep slope from the former 11-room Taylor home on Morgan Creek Road, was mostly wooded and overgrown when Taylor was a boy. It crawled with snakes and lizards and poison ivy, with few houses in sight atop the slopes above.

Years later, "the creek" - as it was simply known - inspired the hit song "Copperline," which Taylor wrote with Duke University professor and author Reynolds Price.

The refrain goes: "Half a mile down to Morgan Creek, Leaning heavy on the end of the week, Hercules (the family dog) and a hog-nosed snake, Down on Copperline, We were down on Copperline."

Before co-writing the song, Taylor visited his old home and found "spec houses" lining the hills that overlook the creek.

As the song continues: "I tried to go back, as if I could, All spec houses and plywood, Tore up and tore up good, Down on Copperline."
Chapel Hill Influences

Many of Taylor's confessional songs provide glimpses of his abundant boyhood surroundings. In a 2000 interview with The Charlotte Observer, he attributed much of his creative energy to those surroundings.

"What I remember most about Chapel Hill is the landscape," he said shortly before his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "I tell my kids that we were pre-TV and there was a lot of empty time there, slow weekends when you just walked into the woods and found whatever you could to kill time.

"There was this long, uninterrupted time to let your imagination grow. I believe that was an important part of whatever creative life I've had."

"Sunshine" is a country folk war protest song from 1971 by Jonathan Edwards, released as the first single from his debut album Jonathan Edwards. The single reached Billboard #4 and earned a gold record. It was released as a single and the positive energy and message of the song seemed just what the nation needed at that moment. Sunshine caught fire first on Boston radio, then nationwide, hitting #4 on the Billboard pop chart on January 15, 1972 and earning a gold record. Here's Edwards' take on its success: "It was just at the time of the Vietnam War and Nixon. It was looking bad out there. That song meant a lot to a lot of people during that time--especially me." A cover of Sunshine was released by 18-year-old pop-folk artist Josh Thompson on April 22, 2007. The new version, featuring vocals by Jonathan Edwards, reached #29 on the Radio & Records' Hot A/C Indicator chart. Jonathan Edwards recorded and released a bluegrass version of "Sunshine" (along with an entire album) with the band "The Seldom Scene." In July 2007, the original Jonathan Edwards recording joined the list of 60s protest songs used to sell high-end consumer products when it was used as the only audio in a Jeep television spot. The Isley Brothers also cut a fantastic version of this song and can be found on their 3+3 album.

Well-known versions include those by Janis Joplin, James Taylor (as Circle Around the Sun), and Hot Tuna. Joan Baez, whose voluminous career began with folk music, recorded a version on her 1961 Joan Baez Vol 2 album. The song was also covered by The Byrds. I Know You Rider was also a staple of the Grateful Dead live shows, usually as the second half of a medley with "China Cat Sunflower."

Tangled Up In Blue - Bob Dylan cover with my new Taylor 654CE 12 string ;oD

this is one of my favorites from blood on the tracks. when i discovered that every song on the album was in open D and open E tuning i decided to relearn every song...very edifying :o)

Eric Clapton once said about Dylan: "His way of playing anything is totally hybrid. It doesn't make sense musically to the scholar. [...] At first listening, everything he does is just real hopeless. Then you look back and realise it's exactly right." As a scholar I take this as a challenge: If something is "exactly right", but still doesn't make sense to the scholar, it is either the scholar's sense or the scholar's analytical tools that are inadequate. I take the liberty of disregarding the first possibility -- although that is probably the commonest cause for scholarly not-being-made-sense-to-ness -- and concentrate on the second: the problems inherent in musical analysis of music of Dylan's kind.

Blood on the Tracks is singer-songwriter Bob Dylan's 15th studio album, released in 1975 by Columbia Records, which marked Dylan's return to Columbia after a two-album stint with Asylum Records.

The album, which followed several years of lukewarm reception for Dylan's work, was greeted respectably by fans and critics. In the years following its release, it has come to be regarded as one of his very best albums - making it quite common for subsequent records to be labeled his "best since Blood on the Tracks."[1] [2] [3] [4] It is also commonly seen as a standard for confessional singer-songwriter albums, though Dylan has denied that the songs are autobiographical, his son Jakob Dylan has stated: "The songs are my parents talking."[5] Most of the lyrics on the album revolve around heartache, anger, and loneliness.

The album reached #1 on the Billboard U.S. pop charts and #4 in the UK. The single "Tangled Up in Blue" peaked at #31 on the Pop singles chart. The album remains one of Dylan's all-time best-selling studio releases, with a double-platinum US certification to date.
The songs are largely seen as inspired by Dylan's personal turmoil at the time, particularly his separation from his then wife Sara Dylan.

All ten songs on the album were originally recorded at New York City sessions produced by Phil Ramone. With Columbia set to release the LP, Dylan pulled back at the last minute, and at year's end re-recorded five of the ten songs in Minneapolis with a crew of area session musicians assembled by his brother, David Zimmerman.

Dylan's fans theorize endlessly about his reasons for revamping the album, with one unconfirmed view being that the musical feel of the album had been monotonous, with too many songs in the same key and the same languid rhythm. It has also been said that, just two weeks before the release of Blood on the Tracks, Dylan played an acetate of the record for his brother, his ensuing comments leading Dylan to re-cut the album. [1]

Told of the album's lasting popularity, Dylan was later to say (in a radio interview by Mary Travers): "A lot of people tell me they enjoy that album. It's hard for me to relate to that. I mean, it, you know, people enjoying the type of pain, you know?"

In Dylan's 2004 memoir, Chronicles, Vol. 1, he claims that although one album of his songs was entirely inspired by short stories by Anton Chekhov, many of his fans and critics treat it as autobiographical. This passage is often cited as a reference to Blood on the Tracks.
