Ryan Crosby, aka Rod Driver, is a sex worker turned forty and still turning tricks. He realizes he wants change but quickly recognizes that he has a very limited skill set. The series explores his discovery of a hidden passion for the culinary arts as he examines his life. A smart, sexy, edgy drama with dark comedy, starring Sebastian La Cause, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Stephen Guarino, Brent Barrett and Gerald McCullouch.
I worked with Gerald McCullouch, Stephen Guarino, Brian Keane and Gregory Gunter on a film called BearCity (TLA Releasing & Sharpleft Studios, 2010). Not only are these guys talented actors but they are also really cool and genuinely awesome guys. When they all agreed to do Hustling I was thrilled. Stephen's role, in episode two, was a last minute addition that I love and adds a texture to the story of Ryan's life that was missing. His relationship to the business side of the business. Stephen brings his comic genius to a dark side here and it's brilliant. Brian Keane as porn director Franco La Rock, in episodes three and four, gives us a twisted look into the mind of a man who can charm you into doing well...just about anything. Gregory Gunter is hilarious and slightly pathetic, in the best of all ways, as Jerry in the pilot. And Gerald McCullouch as Geoffrey in episode seven shows us why he's so popular. These guys are my buds and each of them helped ground this series and give it some outstanding performances. Watch us all in BearCity, on DVD, VOD or Download-to-Own at: http://bearcitythemovie.com/dvd.php or http://www.tlavideo.com/gay-bearcity/p-309931-2
Daphne and I worked together in the Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show. She was Magenta and I played Rocky. We became quite close during the show's run and I was thrilled that she agreed to play Rosa Juarez. Daphne is an actor's actor. She loves the process and the discussion of acting and character and developing a scene. This two-time TONY nominated actress brought Juarez to a level of pure deliciousness.
Jessica Press and I met taking improv 101 at UCB in New York. We hit it off instantly. When I was writing Hustling, I wrote the role of Liv for her. Our first shoot together was the bedroom scene in episode 108. We have great chemistry together and that really makes for a strong onscreen relationship. Watch the arc of their relationship in this playlist.
The music in Hustling adds an incredible texture to the piece. It echos the mood and becomes it's own character. SIRPAUL's music was such a perfect match not only tonally but each song I chose resonated so strongly thematically, that it was almost as if he had written the songs for Hustling. I became instantly obsessed with Devlinelle's, 'Chin Above Water' when I heard it. It's romantic, haunting tone was a perfect match for the season one finale.
From first-time director and producer, Sebastian La Cause comes Hustling, An Original Web Series. A show created by La Cause with the help of some incredibly talented friends.
"This series is a means of creative expression and was made with no money. I learned as I went and did a lot of the stuff myself. Far from perfect and sound issues aside, my awesome sound mixer could only do so much with what I gave him but this was about "doing" and learning and evolving as an artist and a as a human being. I hope you enjoy the story-telling and Ryan's journey of self-worth and discovery."~Sebastian La Cause
