Recovery International was founded in 1937 and conducts weekly group peer-led meetings in nearly 600 communities around the world, as well as telephone and Internet-based meetings. The world's oldest self-help mental health group, Recovery International is a program of Abraham Low Self-Help Systems, a non-profit, non-sectarian, consumer-run organization.

The Recovery International cognitive behavioral training system teaches people to control behaviors and change attitudes toward anger and fears. People who practice the tools learn to change their thoughts and behaviors; changes in attitudes and beliefs follow.

Before attending Recovery International, I was working so hard to prove my mental stability and all I got was more symptoms and cycles of depression and anxiety and the sense of hopelessness of ever being really well. In using RI , I learned to be an average person, that my symptoms were truly distressing but not dangerous and they would rum their course unless I attached danger, and so many more pracitical tools in dealing with my life to make it more serene and healthful. It was unquestionably key in regaining my mental health. Loie Sannes

I have been with Recovery International now for 6+ years. By practicing the self-help techniques learned at the meetings, I have regained my self-assurance and live a live of Peace, Order and Balance. I am bipolar and I constantly have to spot on my moods and temperament changes. I no longer let anger and fear rule my life and home, now it is ruled by reason, patience, camaraderie and it functions at an average level, leaving no regrets and pain. I thank Recovery and I believe that if I would have had these technique before I went into my crisis, I would have never experienced it, but I did and Recovery was there to help me.

I have been attending Recovery International (formerly Recovery Inc.) meetings for over 10 years. What led me to Recovery was feelings of low self esteem, indecisiveness, perfectionism and jealousy.

The Recovery tools that have helped me the most include doing things in part acts, deciding, planning and acting, acting in a cultured manner, being group minded (thinking of the group more than just yourself), using self control, replacing insecure thoughts with secure thoughts and dropping exceptionality.

The group meetings are a great way to reinforce the concepts and gain encouragement and support from other RI members.

One of my favorite RI sayings is "making your mental health a business and not a game".

Before Recovery I had five jobs in six years. Typically, I would get into a minor disagreement, have trouble sleeping, have more trouble working, then more trouble sleeping, finally couldn't work and couldn't sleep. Then I quit, got fired, or went to the hospital. Since joining Recovery I have had jobs of six years, five years, and twenty-one years. I quit the first two to get a better job and retired from the last one.

Everybody tells you not to make mountains out of mole hills. RI tells you how then supports you as you practice.

I was pleased to see this video about an organization that has saved my life. I joined Recovery many years ago. I was suffering from many symptoms such as; anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive thoughts, fears of harming myself and others, fears of knives and sharp objects, fears of cancer and heart disease, feas of being alone or in a crowd.
My psyychologist sent me to Recovery. At the first meeting I heard the leader give an example with manyof the same symptoms I suffered from. However she no longer had them. I finally had hope that if she could do it I could. I put all my effort into the program and have been well for many years. I was able to go through the death of my husband and the care of 5 teenagers, and returning to college to get my degree and many , many other things that could not have been possible before Recovery. When I tooke sick there were no medicines abailable to help with the symptoms.

This is a great video about a great self-help program. The Recovery International coping tools and life skills help people deal successfully with the nervous symptoms that are common to many disgnoses.

I joined Recovery in 1976. Prior to that time, I had suffered from panic attacks and depression. I was completely immobilized and had difficulty functioning. I went home from my first Reccovery meeting with such a sense of hope. After reading every self-help book and running from doctor to doctor, I had finally found "my people".

Thanks to Recovery, I have regained my mental health and have been able to continue to work and have received great promotions but the most important thing I received from Recovery was learning not to be afraid of my symptoms. I cannot imagine how different my life would have been if I had never the had the good fortune to find Recovery. Dr. Low, the founder of Recovery, was a man ahead of his time.

After I had two hospitalizations for depression and delusions in the 60's my psychiatrist referred me to Recovery Incorporated. Except for two more brief hospitalizations I have been depression and delusion free since 1969. I believe that Recovery Int. probably saved my life and certainly made it happier than going into the hospital every few years. Now I am retired and spend my time helping make Recovery Int. available to anyone who may be able to benefit from it.
