The Joy of Water - Clip of the Day
by water 13,997 views
Having safe water to drink and for your daily chores makes life better and can bring joy to a life. Have fun with a joyful dance.
When we visit the field, we visit current project sites and also collect first-hand stories and document the water crisis for those still impacted by a lack of safe water. Our programming in India includes both rural and urban project areas. When we stopped to get video of this teenage girl using clean water to wash her family's dishes, her younger brother broke out in quite a dance.
Safe water brings joy and better health to families and children around the world. What's going to make you dance today? -

Where Would You Go?
by water 2,088 views
Just before dawn a few months ago we visited a slum in central India. Many of the homes in the area surrounded a wide open space, about the size of five or six football fields. This field is low-lying and often floods during the rainy season. We came to visit the community to learn about their hardships caused by a lack of safe water, but we also came to document something few in the West have ever seen - the "morning routine" for every member of the families of this slum.
One by one, people would walk out into the field and squat down. While you couldn't see what was happening, you knew exactly what they were doing. Men, women, the elderly, and even children were visiting the field in those pre-dawn hours.
Sadly, they are not alone. One in three people in the world lack a toilet. In India over 600 million people practice open defecation each day. It's not a cultural issue; it's an infrastructure one. Without modern sewer systems, people simply have no other choice. Fewer than 200 years ago the people living in places like New York City and London had no choice either.
Solving the toilet crisis isn't overly complicated. But first we need to stand face-to-face with the problem and accept how it impacts peoples' safety, health, opportunity, and as importantly their dignity.
Please understand the context of this video is simply to show a fact of life. One fact of life which we witnessed one morning outside one slum in India. While words can hardly describe what we saw, donating your voice can inform others about this shocking issue.

Hyderabad, India: 7:05am - Clip of the Day
by water 5,628 views
If you are a women and living in the slums of Hyderabad, India this is how you spend your mornings - every day. Water is available for about 90 minutes each morning at community stand posts. Each stand post services about 20-30 families. You can collect up to five water vessels of water each day. If you sleep in, have to care for sick children or parents and miss the collection time; you're out of luck until tomorrow.
When you visit the slums right around sunrise you see scenes like this throughout the blocks. This women is doing her neighbors a favor and filling everyone's. -

Waste in Water - Clip of the Day
by water 3,367 views
Even pre-quake, Haiti's water and sanitation situation was dire. This open ditch is just one example. It runs along the streets in Port-au-Prince, filled with garbage, drain runoff, food waste, animal waste and human excrement.
In most developed nations, we take access to safe water and sanitation for granted. But this wasn't always the case. A little more than 100 years ago, New York, London and Paris were centers of infectious disease, and scenes like the one above were commonplace. It was sweeping reforms in water and sanitation that enabled human progress to leap forward. -

Shared Water Source - Clip of the Day
by water 47,661 views
Even before the earthquake, conditions in Haiti were quite desperate. Just behind our hotel in Port-au-Prince, we visited a creek bed. Just above this area it was clear that this valley was used as the neighborhood trash dump. Pigs and goats fed on the trash.
As terrible as that was, nothing prepared us for this: animals using the same creeks that Haitians drink from everyday. When you live in the city and don't have access to water in Haiti you either get water from a water truck or scavenge it from open water sources like this one. -

Washing Bodies and Clothes - Clip of the Day
by water 44,662 views
For families living along the Cauvery River on the outskirts of Trichy, India, the seasonal flow of water is directly tied to their livelihood. In the spring time the river subsides and women can be seen bathing and washing both their family and for-hire laundry.
This afternoon hundreds of women were washing and hang drying laundry. There isn't much concern for knowing the up and downstream quality or cleanliness of the river - it is there for those who wish to use it.
When we look to solve the water crisis we start with the understanding that safe water is used for more than drinking alone. You need it for cooking and cleaning as well. And while we're addressing the safe water issue we also know that without hygiene education and improved sanitation solutions programming will never have a long-term positive impact. -

World Water Day 2010 Timelapse - Clip of the Day
by water 4,414 views
In India alone, the numbers are staggering. More people have a mobile phone than have a toilet. Thankfully there are thousands tirelessly working every single day to make life safer, healthier and better through access to safe water and sanitation.
Each year on World Water Day, nearly 20,000 women journey to a make-shift tent near a rural village in India to celebrate safe water. Groups of women, wearing matching saris, from the city and countryside travel by foot, bus, in backs of trucks - however they can get there for this one day celebration. We know of no other meeting on Earth as large as this one to celebrate something nearly all of us take for granted.
This time-lapse shot comprises three hours of time as groups of women, often with their daughters, arrive and take their seats in the audience for World Water Day 2010. -

Rural Community Well - Clip of the Day
by water 9,860 views
In rural areas of India, more and more villages have wells and or a water tower that provides both shared, and for those with the means, household water taps. This abandoned well use to be the sole water source for an entire village. It was hand dug years ago and then was modified with cement walls and then to include an electrical pump. As it fell into disrepair the community was able to drill a new, deeper well and "cap it" so as to protect the water source from contamination.
Uncovered wells like this one, pose additional challenges for communities. They can collect rain and run-off water which depending on agriculture and livestock practices in the region can be a mixed blessing. And of course, the greatest risk is from drownings which force the permanent closure of a well. -

Cleaning Water Vessels - Clip of the Day
by water 3,413 views
While life is changing in rural India, many families still rely on a community water source. This village's capped well water can be accesses through a series of spigots.
In this clip, women start the water collection process by cleaning their hands and vessels prior to taking the water. This simple hygiene education is becoming quite commonplace throughout the developing world. In fact in many cases, the incremental health benefits for communities who have simple education is greater than a new water source. -

Water Time Lapse - Clip of the Day
by water 2,955 views
On most every corner in the urban slums of India you will see city water being provided via community stand posts. Each post services all the water needs for 30-40 families and water flows once per day for about an hour. Early in the morning women begin to line to up to take their maximum allotment of five vessels per day. If they miss the collection time or the water doesn't come, they won't have water until tomorrow.
This time-lapse captures a 15 minute scene in 15 second of what this reality is like for many living in urban slums.
While here it the developed world it is quite common, having safe water near one's home seven days a week, 24 hours is actually quite rare. -

Community involvement is at the heart of what we do. Success and sustainability is in the hands of the people themselves.
In this clip, four men from the Deowanbari slum in Bangladesh drill a deep tube well, tapping into clean water 300 feet below ground.
The result: 15 families will have access to clean water for the first time!

Hanging Latrines - Clip of the Day
by water 4,548 views
The group of four bamboo structures in the background are toilets - at least, the only thing this slum community in Bangladesh has even close to a toilet. They are called hanging latrines.
These hanging latrines are also just at the edge of a river bed. This water source is not only used by animals and humans, but it is where kids play and bathe, where women do laundry and wash dishes.
This leads to a great deal of water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhea, dysentery, and skin disease - all which are entirely preventable.
This is why safe water, sanitation, and health and hygiene education are all critical for sustainable improvements in health.

Laundry in Dirty Water - Clip of the Day
by water 85,413 views
The Board Guard slum is in the heart of Dhaka, Bangladesh. As seen in this clip, its residents share their contaminated water source with animals. This effects all aspects of life, from cooking to cleaning to bathing to drinking.
The good news: her slum community formed a Water Committee to advocate for clean water projects. We hope to work with them to help them obtain easy access to the safe water and sanitation they deserve.

Carrying Water - Clip of the Day
by water 43,579 views
In rural Honduras, these young girls make the daily trek home, over the hilly terrain, with their water vessels on their head.
Before the new Water.org clean water project in their village, they had to fetch water from a contaminated stream in the mountains. On average, women in developing countries walk 3.7 miles a day for water.
Today, they have ready access to safe water for drinking, cooking, washing, and bathing. Preventable disease has been reduced. A great deal of time has been saved since they no longer have to walk each day for water!

Line at a Hand-Dug Well - Clip of the Day
by water 927 views
This well in Tigray, Ethiopia is just like the hundreds of other hand-dug wells all throughout Africa - lines stretch to the hundreds by early morning, often entirely comprised of children.
These children spend the second half of their days in school, and the first half of the day fetching water for their families. It's imperative that they go out for water early enough so that the heat isn't too extreme, and, as such, these lines often begin to form at, or even before, dawn.

These wells often come with a host of health hazards, and to make matters worse, the women who use these wells might travel as much as 3-hours round-trip, twice daily, simply to fetch water. And once those women reach the well, they have to wait in queues that can stretch into the hundreds.

Wealthy Children Carrying Water Through The City - Clip of the Day
by water 5,993 views
The water crisis looks different in every part of the world, and even in Africa, you notice differences between rural and urban centers.
Judging by their appearance, these three children in a mid-sized city in Ethiopia are from a relatively wealthy family. They also enjoy the safety of bottled water and aren't likely to help their mother with water collection at a pump or community stand post.
Even in places like Mek'ele, Ethiopia, a city of nearly 300,000, few including the wealthiest have a water connection in their home with 7x24 service; something we take for granted every day. -
