NOVA | Manhunt -- Boston Bombers | PBS
by PBS 583 views
Premieres Wednesday, May 29th at 9PM/8c (check local listings)
http://www.pbs.org/nova/manhunt
At 2:50 pm on April 15, two bomb blasts turned the Boston Marathon finish line from a scene of triumph to tragedy, leaving three dead, hundreds injured, and a city gripped by heartbreak and terror. Less than five days later, the key suspects were identified. Soon one was dead, the other in custody. How did investigators transform the chaos of the bombing into a coherent trail of clues, pointing to the accused killers? NOVA follows the manhunt step by step, examining the role modern technology—combined with old-fashioned detective work—played in cracking the case. Given hundreds of hours of surveillance and bystander videos, how did agents spot the suspects in a sea of spectators? Why couldn't facial recognition software I.D. the criminals? How much could bomb chemistry analysis, cell phone GPS, infrared imagery and crowd sourcing reveal about the secrets behind this horrific crime? With the help of top criminal investigators and anti-terrorism experts, NOVA explores which technological innovations worked -- and which didn't -- in the most notorious case of today, and how the world of crime fighting could be transformed tomorrow. -

Independent Lens | What is "Yellow Fever"? | Seeking Asian Female | Video Extra | PBS
by PBS 1,452 views
http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/seeking-asian-female/
Premiering May 6, 2013 at 10pm. Check local listings:
http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/broadcast.html
In this video companion piece to the Independent Lens documentary, Seeking Asian Female, the filmmakers survey people in interracial relationships on the topic of yellow fever--Western white men having an obsession with East Asian women. A quick assessment of dating websites, in-person matchmaking, and the back-pages of free newspapers will tell you that Asian women are still perceived by many to be the romantic (or sexual) ideal. In this clip, "yellow fever" is defined by men who have it, by experts that have studied it (like Sheridan Prasso, journalist and author of The Asian Mystique: Dragon Ladies, Geisha Girls and the Myth of the Exotic Oriental), and by women on both sides of the spectrum (fetishized and not). One white male interviewee remarks his attraction is "so hard to explain." In contrast, Professor Elaine Kim of UC Berkeley's Ethnic Studies counters that Western men have historically been fascinated by the exotic imagery of Asian women. In this and the other episodes, They're All so Beautiful opens with a question, provides answers, and then asks some more.
They're All So Beautiful is a forum on race and dating built around a five-part video series by the filmmaking team behind Seeking Asian Female. Each episode begins with a question to which the audience is encouraged to respond. Many of the questions posed have either been confirmed or challenged by Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans alike. Guest bloggers will contribute perspectives based on their experiences and spark further discussion.

Independent Lens | Do Asian Women Have "White Fever"? | Seeking Asian Female | Video Extra | PBS

When it comes to "yellow fever," many argue it's a two way street. In this webisode, Asian women confess reasons for preferring white men including that they're "more confident, better looking." Academics unpack the reasons why, including "hiergamy," the sociologists' term to describe a universal female desire for marrying above one's own socioeconomic status. An Asian American woman candidly describes lessons of racial hierarchy taught by her parents. Reflections from a black man citing online dating lessons support this: he wants Asian women, but they don't want him. Another Asian women -- a first generation immigrant -- tells of searching for Asian men on Craigslist, yet finding predominantly white men who will date her. To complicate matters further, a chorus of Asian American women emphatically states their refusal to date white men with "yellow fever" who see them "only as Asian." Psychologist Ben Tong quips, "but you are Asian."
Statistics show Asian women disproportionately dating and marrying white men compared to other ethnicities and races. What do you think?

Independent Lens | What about Interracial Marriage? | Seeking Asian Female | Video Extra | PBS

Looking beyond personal ad profiles and first dates, how do cross-cultural relationships with or without the "tarnish of yellow fever" work in the long term? Interviews with interracial couples, as well as experts and those on the hunt for love reflect on what it takes for initial attraction to evolve into real and lasting commitment. One couple -- an Asian American husband with a Caucasian wife -- agree that "race has never been significant" in their relationship, but "culture gets in the way." A Thai immigrant says she can "tune to the same channel" with her white American husband, yet also confesses their marriage is still a secret to her potentially disapproving parents. Owner of a Asian dating site, Julia Ma, reflects on the difficulties of finding marriage (with Asian women) in a high-speed Silicon-valley life where people don't have time to get to know each other. Communication in a cross-cultural relationship is key, she states, but does anyone penetrate their stereotyped expectations before experiencing an actual relationship? Circling back to our original interviews, various men with "yellow fever" declare how much they dream of marrying an Asian woman. At the end of this sequence, we meet Steven (the main character of Seeking Asian Female), one of the many men with "yellow fever," who stumbles over his Freudian slip: "I'm looking for a mate and looking at Asian women to be that mate -- one mate. I only want one mate."

NATURE | The Private Life of Deer (Premiering May 8, 2013) | PBS
by PBS 1,283 views
Whitetailed deer seem to be always around us, whether they're grazing alongside our roadways, feasting on plants in our backyards or darting into the woods, though these "neighbors" do like to protect their privacy. While other species may be negatively impacted by human development, it is just the opposite for the whitetails. Just a century ago, there were less than a million deer in North America. Today, there are nearly 30 million. A look at how these wild deer interact with one another, and how they adapt to living in a suburban environment. "The Private Life of Deer" premieres Wednesday, May 8 at 8/7c (check local listings) and is part of the 31st season of the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series produced by Thirteen in association with WNET for PBS.
