Highlights from "Meet the Mathematicians" at the University of Nottingham...
Meet the Mathematicians Ask most school students to describe a typical mathematician and you are likely to receive the same clichéd response; geeky, grey-haired man who lacks social skills and has no personal life outside maths. Surprisingly, this is not always the case! In order to correct such misconceptions, in April 2009 students from around the UK were invited to a Meet the Mathematicians (MtM) event with the School of Mathematical Sciences and supported by funding from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). There were three main aims for the event. The organisers wanted to convey that Mathematics is a living and evolving subject, each day being applied to the description and understanding of the physical, biological, commercial, digital and social universes around us. The MtM day was designed to help to provide a clearer insight into what the experience of studying Mathematics at university might be like, beyond the usual UCAS day visit. University staff, researchers and postgraduate students were on hand to help with a programme of activities meet with students to explain what they did and why. The day gave a glimpse of life after a Mathematics degree with examples of professionals using the subject within their careers.
