I just got off the phone an hour ago with one of the best steel benders on the planet - Paul Knight. Had a blast talking to him about all kinds of bending and grip stuff. We talked a bit about crush pads and I wasn't aware that he never uses them. Very impressive considering what the man has certified on - the Big King of all Bastards comes to mind! http://goalorient...
I encouraged him to try out the crush pads again and maybe have Jason Payne make him a custom pair for whatever diameter steel he's most interested in crushing down. I don't think Jason has experience making them for 3/16" steel Paul, haha!
I think it will improve his already mega-powerful bending strength and he'll destroy a Huge KOAB this year. Maybe after a few months of specialized focus with the crush pads.
Part of the art and science behind using crush pads is being able to stabilize the pad or pads in your hand. Another big part of the crush pad equation is knowing when to keep the pads on the other end of the bar and just use one crush pad.
My general rule for 7" stock is to go to one crush pad at about the 3.5" mark. And I usually switch to 2 crush pads at the 2.75" to 2.5" mark. Just depends on what kind of steel it is and the bend radius also factors in there.
I cover it a little in the video, but it's well worth mentioning again here - having a "fat" pair of crush pads is also wise because you'll notice a difference in feel at varying distances. Using a fat crush pad when the bar tips are 4" apart is not feasible for a man with 8" (or under) hands. It might be workable for a guy with 9" hands though. http://goalorient... Hand size and length, hand strength, chalked hands and fingers or no chalk...these all factor in to the mix. Experiment with everything and keep detailed notes. You'll likely have one of those great epiphany days where something just "clicks" suddenly and you're moving up a rung or two on the bending strength ladder.
Hope this helps some other guys who are just beginning and the intermediates. I've got plenty more to say about crush pads, but I usually keep it to my inner circle of friends since some of the haters think using crush pads somehow makes you weaker or isn't actually making you stronger in the process of crushing down horrifically hard steel. If those guys were my competition in a grip contest - I'd tell them great job and to keep doing what they're doing.
