Climbing Tools: Sport 101-lowering off Chains 2 mikebarte... - 482 views - 3 days ago
This is another discussion on the merits and pitfalls of lowering off chain ends. Good, bad or ugly this happens and will continue to happen.

We debunk the idea that girth hitching weakens the belay point. This video corrects one small flaw from a previous video. It has come to my attention that certain forums have a high percentage of abusive users. My wings are a shield of steel so I can't be harmed but beware or those who yell loudly and when there point can't be made the get abusive to their fellow forum users. Another thing that I have noticed is that some think climbing harder allows them to know everything. That would be much like measuring intelligence by education. The two are unrelated. I was accused being unprofessional. Since it couldn't have been anything I said I think I have corrected the issue. Lets see if you can spot the difference.

There are links to teh other videos related to lowering off other anchors at the end of this video

This is another in the sport series. There are times when you cannot feed a byte through the end of the anchor. For more information on dealing with anchors watch Parks Canada's Public Safety warden Lisa Paulson give an excellent description of how to deal with rap rings and clip off with quick draws. This video does not cover clipping off with quick draws but with a sewn sling through the belay loop in the harness. http:mountainguide.com if you care to drop a buck

Climbing Tools: Crevasse Rescue Exercise mikebarte... - 602 views - 1 week ago
Avoiding the void! This is a simple load transfer exercise. In the confusing world of crevasse rescue it can all be a bit much. This simple exercise is 4/5 of the crevasse or rock raise system. Back in the day when I used to teach this stuff I found that students could grasp this easily. Little did they know that they were really learning the crevasse rescue system. This is a exercise remember. You really wouldn't want suspend a real person off just one prussik. Rather you would have a back up of some sort. This video assumes that you know the Munter hitch and how to tie it off. The prussik knot is also used. I have inserted links to videos teaching those hitches in the video.

Climbing Tools: The Monster Munter mikebarte... - 922 views - 1 week ago
The Monster Munter is a hitch that I learnt around 1990. It took awhile to get used to but in the end I used it quite a bit. It has the advantages of adding friction to a lower and most important does NOT TWIST THE ROPE! I yelled that out for the world to hear. It really is not that hard to learn and with a little practice you'll be whipping it up like a pro. It is also the hitch that the "know it all" at the crag has never heard or seen. Useful with heavy loads.

Climbing Tools: The Bolt mikebarte... - 528 views - 2 weeks ago
Concrete mason bolts are the standard for rock climbing. This video is not in any way a complete lesson on bolting ut more of a insight as to how those bolts got there and whats involved. In the Rockies these 3/8 Hilti bolts are by far the most common. There are places where glue in bolts are required. Because of the limitations on time aloud we may have to revisit this again sometime.

Mike Barter makes a donation/Louise Falls mikebarte... - 4,140 views - 2 years ago
Mike does a little charity work and recalls the good old days when he used to be a mountain guide. Here he is guiding the British army up Louise falls. It is super cold and the ice is hard and brittle. (-35c). The town of Banff has passed a tough new law against jay-walking and put up anti-jay-walking fences.

Mike Barter has a glory dayz flashback./Replicant mikebarte... - 3,681 views - 2 years ago
Mike has a flashback to the late 90's. High up on Mt Rundle the boys climb the Replicant an honest 6+. Heavy spindrift hits our lead star. Special thanks to Michelle Garbert who came out on the second day and belayed Greg. She had come a long way in a year. She busted up the Replicant like it was a high school kegger then headed to the valley to smoke a bowl.

This is the last of the Rundle ice climbs and we move on to more serious topics.

I am a bit worried. I should be 20 pounds heavier with winter comin on. Times are hard and this may be the year that I visit the big mountain range in the sky.
About Me: So you may be wondering who this guy is that is putting out these training videos. Why would I give away all of this information. One reason is because I one of the few people in the world who can. As you can see I own the domain mountainguide.com. That gives you an idea about how progressive thinking I can be. From 1990 onward I carried a hi-8 video camera pretty much every place that I went. I worked 17 years as a full time mountain guide. The last 4 years I have worked as a free-lance audio-visual technician.
Presently I am a stay at home Dad trying to generate a little income by producing and reproducing pretty much everything I know about climbing and mountaineering. You will see many other guides and climbers offering advice. If I published it I stand behind it. Anything labeled CLIMBING TOOLS can be considered an instructional lesson of some sort. There are others that take you to classic climbs or locations.
My wife thinks that I should charge somehow but she doesnt realize that people do not pay for content. Advertisers might and those who use your product a lot may. In order for me to put out content and prove her wrong I would ask that if you use these a lot or are a institution that uses the instructional videos please visit http://mountainguide.com and donate a dollar or two.
Thanks
Joe McKay

There are only two things you really need, everything else is extra. The first is fear and the second is common sense.

Greetings, MIke Barter, I've got a question, what would you suggest regarding using a solo descent of a not very steep mountain face just 20 meters, where I use a 30 meters 8 mm rope, harness connected with a carabiner? I could had used the rope around a tree one end double 8 know in carabiner, the other around my shoulder?( as I've meet this situation in one place, but not having the equipment so couldn't descend in scrambling style) Thanks

Love your videos. I see you are a fan of beginner guitar lessons. If there is anything you want to see on guitar I am more than happy to oblige. I've learned more than enough from your videos.

hey

got a question,if u could answer it would be much appreciated.
I am looking at some mountaineering boots and am trying to decide.
I know different brands fit differently but am wondering what you thought of the scarpa charmoz boot and the scarpa summit.I am just getting into mountaineering/alpine climbing and want something that will be suitable for easier climbs like joffre,fay,aberdeen,lefroy,victoria...Have u heard anything about these boots or do u have any suggestions???
