About Me:
While practicing, conducting research, and teaching at Children's Hospital on pediatrics, family violence, and child and family development, Eli's music grew in new directions.
Musically, he is best known for co-founding the New Black Eagle Jazz Band in 1970, playing piano in its first year and tuba for 30 more, during which he and the band made more than 40 recordings and gave hundreds of concerts across the U.S. and Europe. During this time, Eli won the polls for best jazz tuba player by Jazzology Magazine (twice) and The Mississippi Rag.
Eli's classical career took off again in March, 2007. With the Boston Classical Orchestra, and Mike Roylance, principal tuba of the BostonSymphony Orchestra, he gave the premiere of Howard Frazin's concerto for 2 tubas and chamber orchestra.
With Mike, he then organized the 7 piece Cupcake Philharmonic Orchestra to perform the children's classic, "Tubby the Tuba" and similar works. At Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood in 2008, Eli played piano and conducted "Tubby," "When You Wish Upon a Star," and a delightful mash-up of children's songs commissioned by the BSO with Mike as soloist, the Cupcakes, and a dozen other Symphony players.
Since, under the wing of the BSO's education and community programs department the CPO has performed this concert in the Boston Public Library and schools around Boston. Eli also performs frequently with his Jazz Tuber Trio, named for their first gig at the Boston Spring Flower Show, that features the banjo virtuoso and vocalist Jimmy Mazzy, and the traditional jazz and klezmer masterTed Casher on clarinet, tenor, and soprano saxophone.
Eli's most recent book, "The Men They Will Become," addresses the roots and expressions of character in boys and the best ways to nurture them. Simultaneous with its publication by Perseus Books, his tuba/piano recording "The Men They Will Become: Jazz Takes on Male Character," with Butch Thompson, piano and clarinet, and Jimmy Mazzy, banjo and vocals, was released by Stomp Off Records. Eli currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Berklee College of Music and the Board of Visitors of the New England Conservatory of Music.
