Mill Network at Kinderdijk-Elshout - a World Heritage Site
For nearly two centuries the windmills of Kinderdijk have pumped excess water out of the polder. The Mill Network has all the elements of a hydraulic system to keep the land dry: dykes, pumping stations, reservoirs and of course the windmill.
According to legend, Kinderdijk owes its name to an event in 1421 when a huge mass of water, the Saint Elisabeth flood, inundated everything in the area. At the foot of a dike was a cradle with a crying baby. A cat jumped into the cradle and thus kept it in balance and afloat. The child was rescued though the cat disappeared into memory -- thus the name Kinderdijk.

Beemster Polder - Droogmakerij de Beemster - World Heritage
At the start of the Dutch Golden Age, the 17th century, the northern part of Holland had enough capital and technology to deal with its water problems. Under supervision of Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater (architect, mill builder and hydraulic engineer) the Dutch started pumping the water out of the large lakes around Schermer Island. In 1612 the Beemster was one of the first lakes to be turned into dry land. Today the reclaimed land lies approximately 3.5 metres below sea level.
The Beemster Polder is an exceptional example of reclaimed land in the Netherlands. It has preserved intact its well-ordered landscape of fields, roads, canals, dykes and settlements, laid out in accordance with classical and Renaissance planning principles.
The Beemster was placed on UNESCO's world heritage list as a unique example of seventeenth century landscape architecture.

Nature Notes from Norway
The National Parks in Norway include Rondane, Dovrefjell, Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen. Along with the fjords they add up to an enormous ecosystem with many varied ecotypes.
The rhythm of winter and summer, water and snow keep changing the landscape. The glaciers provide the rivers and lakes with water. The rivers for their part cut the deep valleys.
In this way a region developed which some people might find breathtaking, while others consider it to be bare and dull.
The musk ox is on no account dull. Neither is the ptarmigan, the reindeer or the elk. In this playlist we take a closer look at Norway's Nature.
