This scene features tripod LiDAR scans of a major landslide in California, courtesy of Gerald Bawden (USGS). The data on the screen in the upper left was projected in 3D using linear polarization to separate right and left eye views. Audience members were given polarized glasses to wear. The 3D scene is continued with 2D projection on the boxes to the right and below the 3D screen. The data scenes were preset by Ellen Bromberg (U of Utah), Louise Kellogg (UCDavis) and Gerald. However, the projections were calculated real-time during the performance.

LiDAR data consists of clouds of points, in this case millions of points. The projection software only shows the points needed for the current view using an "out-of-core" data management technique. The flashing of panels of data reflects those times when more (or less) data are necessary for the current view. Many of the objects that are solid in reality appear partially transparent when data are sparse because surfaces aren't entirely covered in points. This gives the data a pointillist aesthetic.
