Hangout with CERN and TED-Ed - Dimensions Multiplied (S03E04)In this hangout we're joined by some of the CERN scientific contributors and TED-Ed animation contributors to find out more about the animations that premiered at the TEDxCERN event on 3 May. What science were they trying to convey, how did the collaboration work and what would they do if they had the chance again? To watch all 5 CERN TED-ED animations and dig deeper into the subjects see: The beginning of the universe, for beginners Lesson by Tom Whyntie, animation by Hornet Inc. http://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-beginning-of-the-universe-for-beginners-tom-whyntie Exploration on the Big Data frontier Lesson by Tim Smith, animation director: Biljana Labovic for TED-Ed. http://ed.ted.com/lessons/exploration-on-the-big-data-frontier-tim-smith Dark matter: The matter we can't see Lesson by James Gillies, animation director: Jeremiah Dickey for TED-Ed. http://ed.ted.com/lessons/dark-matter-the-matter-we-can-t-see-james-gillies What happened to antimatter? Hangout With CERN: Multiplying Dimensions TEDxCERN preview (S03E03)In this week's hangout hosts Steve Goldfarb and Sara Wyke, with the help of Kelly Izlar, connect from CERN's Globe of Science and Innovation on the eve of TEDxCERN. They are joined by special guest TEDxCERN speakers... Brittany Wenger, an 18-year-old high-school senior and brilliant young scientist who was the Grand Prize Winner 2012 Google Science Fair for her project "Global Neural Network Cloud Service for Breast Cancer". Chris Lintott who runs the Zooniverse, the world's most successful collection of citizen science projects, and is co-presenter of the BBC's long-running 'Sky at Night'. Becky Parker, MBE, Head of Physics at Simon Langton Grammar School and winner of the first RAS Patrick Moore Medal for her outstanding work teaching astronomy. Her pupils make up 1% of the national cohort of physics undergraduates in the UK. George Church helped initiate the Human Genome Project and is one of the 6 scientists who proposed the The Brain Activity Map Project that's making a splash in scientific circles. ... while rehearsals for the big event the following day take place in the background. Claudia Marcelloni, TEDxCERN Curator and Head also gives hints at what is in store. Recorded live on 2nd May 2013. Hangout with CERN: Extra dimensions (S03E02)Authors of two of the most cited papers in physics for the past ten years, this hangout features special guest theorists Lisa Randall from Harvard University and Raman Sundrum from University of Maryland, who join CERN physicists to look at how the LHC experiments are investigating extra dimensions. Our host, physicist Steven Goldfarb connects from the ATLAS experiment control centre with physicist Christophe Clement from Stockholm University, Sweden and Taylor Bayouth a CERN Visitor from Los Angeles, with Achintya Rao monitoring questions on social media. Also joining the discussion is CMS experiment physicist Sam Harper from Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK. Recorded live on 25th April 2013. Hangout with CERN and the Google Science Fair: Why does antimatter matter? (S03E01)What is antimatter? Why does antimatter matter? Series 3 of Hangout with CERN starts with a bang! A special hangout with CERN and the Google Science Fair that takes us into the weird and wonderful world of antimatter. CERN physicists Tara Shears and Niels Madsen speak to host Shree Bose, Google Science Fair 2011 grand prize winner and to Samantha Lee, Google Student Ambassador, about this mysterious part of our universe. What antimatter research is going on at CERN and what are the implications? CERN's Rolf Landua also shows us the Hollywood-side of antimatter! Google Science Fair is an online science competition open to students aged 13-18 from around the globe. Students can register at googlesciencefair.com, the closing date is 30 April 2013.
