There is conclusive medical evidence that nearsightedness is largely preventable. However, around a third of the population needlessly develope this preventable condition in their youth.

For some common sense logic on why nearsightedness should not become an accepted trend of our modern lives, see the link: http://nearsightedness.org/...

American Optometric Association (AOA) states that near work is the largest contributor to the developement of nearsightedness, heredity plays only a partial role: http://www.aoa.org/myopia.x...

AOA published in their "Optometric Clinical Practice Guideline" evidences that bifocal lenses with reading glasses section on the bottom slowed the progression of myopia significantly: see page 31-35 http://www.aoa.org/document...

Note: Some additional evidences are listed as channel comments. The list is too long to fit in the channel description.

This is an excellent summary of the medical second-opinion on the prevention of myopia.
