A team of four industrial design students from the Delft University of Technology have been working with people in Kenya last year to develop a street vending bicycle.
Cycle to school is a bicycle credit programme of Cycling out of poverty.
Families of children walking more than 10 km to school can apply for a bicycle on micro credit from the parter organisations of Cycling out of poverty.
The distance school children have to walk to school in Africa is very large. And since many children also help out with domestic tasks (such as collecting water and firewood) is their daily travel time to school a constraint. This often results in a high drop-out rate. And this is a shame, since a eduction is an opportunity for employment. In this project students and their parents get access to a bicycle on micro credit. Selection of the beneficiaries is based on the distance students have to walk to school, and the reputation of the family in repaying their credits.
Accessibility of medical facilities is a matter of life and death. Many Africans live far away from the nearest health centres. In medical emergencies they need to walk long distances. A bicycle can save lives. A bicycle enables medical staff to visit more patients each day. A bicycle ambulance makes it possible for patients to reach health centres quickly and horizontally. And mobile pharmacies enable people in rural areas to access affordable medicine. http://coop-africa.org/en/our-work/bike4care
Cycling out or poverty is a Dutch foundation engaging in fundraising for bicycle projects in Africa. Many poor Africans lack money to buy a bicycle but do have a view on how a bicycle could be used to earn a livelihood. These people can turn to one of our African partner organisations and apply for a Cycling out or poverty-subsidised bicycle which they can pay off in monthly instalments.
