Wojciech Kilar: Exodus (1980)

Pole Wojciech Kilar has hit fame with his European post-minimal style. His music has received wide acclaim with concertante works, symphonies and music for award winning films such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula and The Pianist. One of his first orchestral-choral works to gain notoriety was Exodus. Using ancient sonorities, Kilar depicts in a bolero-style development the long march the Hebrews did after being delivered by the Lord’s Hand from Egyptian captivity, which is commemorated in the Jewish Passover. However, Kilar tells not only about the ancient Exodus, but a more recent one: the modern Exodus of Hebrew people to the State of Israel, established after WWII and the Holocaust.

El polaco Wojciech Kilar ha ganado fama con su estilo europeo posminimalista. Su música ha logrado gran aceptación con obras concertantes, sinfonías y música para películas aclamadas como Drácula de Bram Stoker o El Pianista. Una de sus primeras obras sinfónico-corales en adquirir notoriedad fue Exodus. Usando sonoridades antiguas, Kilar describe en un desarrollo al estilo bolero la gran marcha de los hebreos tras haber sido liberados por la mano de Dios del cautiverio egipcio, misma que se conmemora en la Pascua Judía. Sin embargo, aquí Kilar hace referencia a un éxodo más moderno: aquél relizado por el pueblo hebreo de hoy en día al Estado de Israel, establecido tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el Holocausto.
