The piers are the steel sections that look like a double T and are positioned down the centre of the bridge. They carry the steel girders/beams which are the backbone of the bridge (See video of Stage 14). This video shows the last pier being put into place on Monday 16th May 2014. It shows the pier columns craned and bolted onto the subterranean reinforced concrete piles (See video of Stage 12). Meanwhile square plates on which the girders will be bolted are fixed to the top section of the pier and cross members are fixed to the columns for added strength and stability.
