Olde Towne Middle School Radio and Tech Club members as well as the Science Club members and sponsors (Bill Richardson and Bobby Robinson) launched a near-space balloon launch March 3rd. The balloon carried science experiments, cameras, communications and tracking equipment. It landed near Ashville, AL and was fully recovered by amateur radio operators who were chasing the balloon. The balloon and payload named LEO-1 reached an amazing altitude of 97,000 feet! That is a trip 244 miles over a period of about 2.5 hours. All science payloads as well as communications gear were safely recovered. It took students, teachers, sponsors, and many amateur radio operators months to plan the launch and recovery of the balloon.
