Successful Reflections on Respect Candlelight Vigil in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Ninety concerned citizens of Eddy County gathered Friday evening for a candlelight vigil calling for respect and civility in the community and nation at large. The Reflections on Respect gathering was held Friday, April 16th at 7:00 PM on the Eddy County Courthouse Lawn.
The event featured two local speakers, prayers, moments of silence, and singing performances.
One of the event organizers was former mayoral candidate Wendy Amato. The goal of the event, says Amato, was to create a stronger community among people who are compassionate and hopeful. We wanted to show not only Carlsbad, but other communities, how powerful it can be when people come together to set a positive intention.
Rather than complain about whats wrong with our country, Amato added, We wanted to come together to celebrate whats good: diversity, kindness, caring, and hope for a better future. The event organizers represented a diversity of community, religious, and political perspectives. The belief we share in common is that the use of fear or the threat of violence does nothing to solve problems, said the Rev. Dave Rogers, one of the invited speakers. We are simply reaching out to encourage rational, meaningful, and respectful engagement!
Rogers stated in his speech: The good news is the bad news is wrong! There are those who would want to scare us into believing the bad news and even become enslaved to the bad news! But the good news isthe bad news is wrong! Peace is possible!
