This interview with Arsenio Rodríguez was conducted by José Luis Logreya, who also evidently made the cassette tape recording. The cassette label indicates that this recorded interview was presented to Raúl Rodríguez (Arsenio's brother) in July of 1993. Raúl subsequently gave this cassette tape to Alan Geik, who had a friendhip with Raúl and also used him on his "Caravana Cubana" recording project. Alan asked me to digitize the tape, which is quite old and fragile. There was a considerable amount of distortion and ambient noise, which I attempted to ameliorate by carrying out two equalization passes. For the second pass, I utlized the standard RIAA curve. The equalization does remove some of the background noise, however there are some remaining sections of the tape that are somewhat compromised in spite of these efforts. It is a treasure trove of information, though, and I am grateful to Alan for allowing me to share it with the our musical community. For the image, I want to express my appreciation to Alicia Alava, who kindly granted me permission to use this exquisite photo that was taken by her late husband, Silvio Alava. For more of Silvio's brilliant historical photography, look for his book, "Spanish Harlem's Musical Legacy," available from amazon.com at this link:
