August 2nd 2012 - The 'Scarborough Spa Orchestra' is to revive a work lost from their repertoire years ago. The director of music Paul Laidlaw has worked hard to adapt the score to a smaller orchestra in order that it can be performed at its original home venue Scarborough Spa. Over seven decades ago it was played here repeatedly to great public acclaim. It is an unusual and fantastic take on a much loved Yorkshire Anthem. This was whistled by Eric's freind Tom Laughton (brother of Charles Laughton the famous actor) on a treck across Lockton Moor near Scarborough. Eric decided to do a variation on this in the style of Rossini. Tom was so impressed he challenged Eric to write it down. Poor Eric was shocked the following week to see it advertised all over town to be performed for the opening of the Cricket festival. Nevertheless even after just returning from a mission to Delius in France Eric got his act together and produced an incredible piece of muisc in its own right 'Rossini on Ilkla Moor' I wonder what Rossini would have made of it...I think he would be delighted!!!!
