Having failed to hinder the Japanese whale hunt this season, the rust buckets of Sea Shepherd with their crew of children are leaving the Southern Ocean for the warmer waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
She Shepherd announced they will interrupt the poachers of the Mediterranean Sea to hinder their bluefin tuna fishing.
Bluefin tuna is reported to be on the brink if extinction world-wide. Bluefin tuna fishing takes place in the Pacific Northwest, New England states (Maine), off the Carolinas (North Carolina / South Carolina), the Gulf of Mexico, other fishing areas, and the Mediterranean Sea. How come Sea Shepherd is sailing to harass the fishermen of the Mediterranean Sea and not the bluefin tuna fishermen of the United States of America?
Bluefin tuna is a popular, desired, and expensive commodity in Japan. A recent bluefin tuna auction in Japan brought in around $177,000.00 for one fish!
The Japanese eat whales, and Sea Shepherd attempts to stop that. The Japanese eat bluefin tuna and Sea Shepherd is now attempting to interrupt that. Could this be considered "culinary imperialism?" After all they were accused of being "cultural imperialist," so why not add "culinary" to their imperialism?
Maybe Sea Shepherd wants to contribute to causing the price of the bluefin tuna to escalate? There is a company in Australia called Clean Seas Tuna, who announced they will be establishing a bluefin tuna farm. Do you think perhaps Sea Shepherd and their types have stock in this company? Thus by reducing the numbers of fished bluefin tuna it could cause the price of farm raised bluefin tuna to rise along with the fortunes of the company's stock holders. "Economic imperialist" also?
Norway: Oslo's Fisheries Minister, Lisbeth Berg-Hansen along with the Norwegian Mink Whales Union announced they will slaughter around 1,286 whales come this April. Will Sea Shepherd be attempting to interfere with the Norwegians? Or is Sea Shepherd only concerned with curtailing the Japanese diet?
