Until the construction of the Afsluitdijk (IJsselmeer Barrier Dam), the Zuiderzee extended to the Wadden Islands. For centuries, many inhabitants of Terschelling and Vlieland lived directly from this sea. They engaged in trade, earned money in fishing industry, were farmer or combed the beaches.
