EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has described Sunday's nuclear agreement with Iran as a first step towards 'the time and environment for a comprehensive solution".

According to Michael Mann, an EU official, it is the change of government in Tehran that made the weekend's nuclear deal in Geneva possible.

"Catherine Ashton has been negotiating on the behalf of the E3+3 for a number of years on this issue and now with the new government it has been possible to make much more progress whereas the previous government was not really interesting in engaging."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu branded the deal "a historic mistake".

However Elena Aoun, an international relations expert, says Netanyahu's hardline stance has failed.
