This is a diy router surfacer/planer I made from scraps in the workshop.

I've had loads of queries on how to build this and unfortunately I freestyled it from scraps I had in the workshop. Thus there's no real plans. However, here's the basic parts I've used.
All of the rails are made using a product called "connect-it" which is available in australia from hardware stores like bunnings/masters. http://connect-it.cc/ It's quite easy to work with given you have to only cut to length and then use the plastic connectors to join it all up. The channel is always pointing up with this setup to create a guide for the bearings.
I've also used 8 skate board bearings to give each axis caddy a smooth motion.
sub base and x-axis rails: - sub base is an old laminate pantry door - on that I've screwed (from the under side as to not impact the bearings from rolling) some alluminium box that has a channel on it.
x-axis caddy: - made to fit the width of the sub base + enough allowance for my router to get to the full width of the base board. - also made to fit the width of my router base plate - I've mounted skateboard bearings to the bottom of this and they run on the outside of the channel in the x-axis rails. - it runs nice and smooth for the full length of the base board
y-axis caddy: - made in a similar way to the x-axis caddy just smaller - mounted bearings to it to allow it to roll side to side in the x-axis caddy - its got a perspex base (6mm) that allows me to drop my curent router base plate into and lock it down with longer base plate screws
I'll try to do a video follow up to show it in more detail for ya'll. This setup works quite well for awkward pieces and for those of us who can't afford a proper thicknesser.
