The United States Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon 2013 is a competition that challenges collegiate teams to design, build and operate net zero houses, which are energy efficient, affordable and attractive.

Power Houses follows the trials and tribulations of the four California teams competing in the 2013 competition. These brilliant, energetic and idealistic college students must quickly face the realities of building a house. With looming deadlines, they battle delivery schedules, subcontractors, change orders, building code inspectors and much more. All the while, building solar-powered houses equipped with cutting edge, never-before-seen technologies that fascinate and amaze.

The four California teams are:
1. Stanford University
2. Santa Clara University
3. University of Southern California
4. Southern California Institute of Architecture paired with the California Institute of Technology
