CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- If people are feeling tired all the time or have trouble losing weight, a newer test now available at the Happy Hormone Cottage in Mason could give some additional information to help people get the right treatment. It's called the Thyroflex. Angie Montgomery recently decided to take the Thyroflex test which starts with a comprehensive questionnaire and information put into a computerized machine. Jeff Hogrefe, a pharmacist, said, The Thyroflex machine measures whats the functionality of your thyroid. Hogrefe is a pharmacist who administers the test. It is approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration. It measures what the thyroid does in the body.Part of what made Angie say she felt like an ideal candidate for the additional information and additional testing was that she'd already had a blood test and that blood test did show her thyroid was within normal ranges. She said, however, she was still feeling some symptoms associated with lower thyroid; fatigue, lack of concentration, feeling cold all the time.Angie said, I'm cold all the time. My nose is cold, losing weight is difficult. It works with small hammer that is connected to a computer. The hammer is used to strike a tendon near the elbow which measures the rate and caliber of the reflex response to determine thyroid function. Hogrefe said generally the longer it takes for a reflex response, the more thyroid a person generally needs.Angies tests from the Thyroflex came up within normal ranges. So for right now she will continue vitamin supplements and a healthy lifestyle and will follow up with her healthcare provider. This test is not covered by most medical insurance plans. The test itself is 60 dollars but people do need a nurse practitioner visit for assessment first. That can be an additional charge.
